A conclusion I came to when I was a Christian studying theology and Christian history is that you want to look at people's actions before believing their words. There were plenty of theologians who talked a good theological game in between or after doing horrible things... (Athanasius, Augustine, Luther, Calvin etc) usually they 'won' any theological disputes and controversies they were engaged in because they were more willing than their opponents to get their hands dirty with the bribes and the corruption and the political force to persecute their opponents and thus 'win'. You've got to ask yourself "do I want to model my beliefs after those held by such a person?" The horrendous immoral conduct of US conservatives across the board, and Faux News in particular, should be a warning to anyone not to want a bar of what those people are selling.
Not just the historical figures you mentioned, but the grand tradition of Conservative hypocrisy continues into the modern era with the likes of the Fox reprobates and the quiverfull of Duggars. But my personal favourite...for sheer, breathtaking hypocrisy...is Ted Haggard preaching against the filth of homosexuality whilst romping with money-boys.

I would hope that would be the standard for anyone seeking truth.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

I no more believe Fox News is conservative than I believe Hillary Clinton really cares about women.

People on the quest for power/money/fame are going to do whatever they must in order to win general approval.
In the end it is that power/money/fame that is their religion, not conservatism or liberalism.

If the people on this forum insist on making it a conservative vs. liberal thing then the people on this forum will never understand the real religion of these people and will be trapped into supporting candidates that will sell them out at the first opportunity. With that we'll end up with governments just like what we've had now and for the past 40 years.

I'd rather have an honest and transparent liberal in office than a lying conservative.
If you wouldn't rather have an honest conservative in office over a lying liberal than you're foolish.

Some of my favorites are "porno Pete" LaBarbera who in between ranting about the evils of homosexuality, spends his time watching his large pile of gay porn DVDs and attending gay fetish events... for "research"; and Pat blood-diamonds Robertson who in between blaming abortion, pagans and teh gayz for 9/11 and hurricane Katrina manages to make plenty of doomsday predictions that fail to happen and team up with African dictators to commit charity fraud and funnel donated money to diamond-mining for his own profit.

It should be obvious from the manifestly false accusations brought against Athanasius that any accusations from the same quarters should be taken with a large grain of salt. Of course, if you're determining your beliefs based on the actions of a few, you're in no position to cast stones.

                  And these horrible things were...?

I'm assuming with John Calvin you're referring to Michael Servetus, and it's true Luther got really weird in his later years, especially in regards to the Jews, but that was well after most of his major writings. But I'm unsure what "horrible things" you are referring to with Athanasius or Augustine. Maybe with Augustine you're referring to his lustfulness when he was younger, but I believe that was before he converted (and afterwards he was quite critical of his previous acts), so it seems downright goofy to hold that against him.

Such a contrast. The difference is between an intelligent, educated woman and Trumpian bimbo's.

It goes without saying that Australian politics are perfect.

Seriously, I think US politics are relatively honest...if calculating and devious. The possible exception is Trump and his cohorts; he seems to have no problem telling outright, obvious lies to get what he wants.
