  • A feminist making sense

As a 'liberal', and more importantly as a person, I fundamentally support equal rights for all people. And so, of course, I support "feminism" in the historical meaning of "equality for women".

However, modern "3rd wave feminism" I usually find down-right completely stupid and tend to just laugh at it and ignore it. I know a lot of conservatives on this site like to take jabs at modern feminism and IMO they're usually completely right to do so, as so often modern feminist discussions are devoid of facts and full of extreme amounts of over the top outrage, emotion, and bias, combined with ridiculous theories of how society works that someone has made up themselves and never actually tested in the slightest. (It's worth noting that male liberal atheists mocking feminists for their over the top outrage and ridiculous arguments is so common on the internet that it's sort of a thing)

So I was pleasantly surprised at encountering an article this week where a feminist makes sense, and says scientific and intelligent things, for the whole article. It's worth reading in its entirety, and I would encourage conservatives here to do so, simply so that people gain an appreciation that there are sane feminists out there, and that talking about the biological differences between men and women can be done in a rational and reasoned manner by feminists at least in some instances. This is one of those Black Swan moments, so it's worth appreciating.

    Here is the article:
A Feminist Biologist Discusses Gender Differences In The Animal Kingdom:

It's an interesting article about how human sexual distinctions differ to animal sexual distinctions if nothing else (spoiler: human sexual differences aren't as extreme as animal ones).
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

Reminds me of Camille Paglia who somehow acknowledges and celebrates the differences between the sexes without those differences being the grounds for discrimination.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

Says the guy who quacked something about not wanting foreigners to mess up housing prices in sheepland or something!!! I.e. no, you actually don't want 'equal rights for all'.

She ignores eg. yuuuuge physical differences, like upper body strength, and surprise surprise not-so-convenient implications not discussed!!! Aka she cherrypicks evidence to be discussed

Look, I know you guys (starlight, rodent) desperate to find 'feminist making sense', but this making you much much easier for scamming by 'look at me rational reasoned feminist biologist, I will talk about important sex difference proven by SCIENCE but not about physical strength differences!!!'

Notice his carefully chosen phrasing: "all people". If he wants to deny someone basic human rights then he simply has to convince himself they're not a person. That's why he can callously promote and defend the idea that it should be legal to kill babies for a certain period following their birth.

Does she say this or is it something you made up? I'm guessing the latter because it depends on the animal and I can't imagine an actual biologist making a blanket statement like that. Many animals have almost no sexual differences beyond the most basic.

Under what circumstances would it be acceptable to allow a baby to die?

Does morality require us to keep the baby alive at any and all expense even if it will live as a vegetable for a couple of years and die anyways?
I suspect that there comes a point where you realize that even though medical science could keep the baby alive that the compassionate thing is to let it die.

On the other side of the spectrum there came a point where we withheld medical care from my grandmother so she could pass. The same happened with my mother in law. In both those circumstances if I had some moralist telling me that we couldn't let these two suffering people go there would have been a row in the parking lot. It isn't black and white.

It's not about allowing babies to die, Starlight is fine with killing babies after they were born merely because the mother doesn't want them anymore. According to him, they have no real value until their cognitive abilities surpass those of the most intelligent animals.

How does he see any liberal making it to voting age?

how can there even be such a thing as "feminism" and "equal rights for women" in a society where anyone can be any gender just by declaring it so?

Being a liberal is such a gamble as it is that I'm not sure how they make it to voting age in the first place. I guess avoiding triggering predatory instincts in your betters by appearing as weak and submissive as possible is a pretty good survival strategy.

Point of fact: Even with poor odds a 'gamble' needs to have a chance of success.
I like your term 'suicide cult' better.

Ancient societies seemed to do just fine with such things as exposing infants and Republican Rome had a thing called "pater familias" - the head of the house, who had power of life and death over any member of the household, regardless of age.

Unfortunately not. Submission is, rather, a sure fire way to trigger those instincts. Bullying studies and mugging stats tend to show a greater chance of becoming a victim if the person looks like a potential victim.

I'm sure they had supporting arguments every bit as convincing as those advanced by pro-choice advocates.
