Looks like store brands are about the same as brand-name
Overall.
And most importantly, cheaper. http://www.walletpop.com/consumer-re...rands/1247642/...the compass of existence held more than my text-books had revealed, more than I had ever dreamed of. Unfortunately, it's kinda hit and miss with store brand stuff. Some of it is OK, some of it is just plain crap. And different store brands have different good and bad, so often you spend a lot of money on crap to find what's OK.

Re: Looks like store brands are about the same as brand-name
Many (but not all) store brands are made and packaged by name brand producers. For instance, we used to have a well known lunch meat and hotdog plant here locally. If the bologna packing line stacked the bologna out of line, then they put a store brand label on it...if it was nice and straight and pretty, then they put there own label on it. The difference in price was over a dollar a package.
Muz is right though...some are much better than others...
OTOH, some store brands make things for each other...
...Years ago, my Dad worked for a soda bottling plant owned by the supermarket chain, Safeway. (He hasn't worked there in over 10 years, so this is out of date data) They made and bottled soda for Albertson's as well as several local chains...and several (relatively small player) national brands...it's been to long ago, so I don't remember which one it was...I want to say it was Jolt Cola, but I could be wrong about that...and maybe also Shasta....not sure.

Re: Looks like store brands are about the same as brand-name
Sometimes there is a difference. I used to buy store-brand Advil, but found I was taking more to get the same effect. I asked the pharmacist and was told that many store-brand OTC stuff used more filler than the name-brand, and wasn't as effective.
Found the same thing with Cold FX and others.
Food, too. Sometimes the store-brands are okay, and sometimes it's worth it to pay a little more for the name-brand.

I'll agree on the meds, mossrose. I've had bad luck with store-brand ibuprofen as well. Oh and ziploc bags. Generic ziplocs are THE worst. But meats, breads, generic stuff like that is generally equivalent IMO.

Our experiment at home yesterday showed that Kraft brand mini-marshmellows melted more evenly than store brand mini-marshmellows.

It's the bone meal and earwig paste that does it
