Hussein, once a "valued ally", became an enemy. Osama bin Laden and the Mujahideen (now called al-Qaeda), once a "valued ally," has become our enemy. Iran, once a "valued ally," (the Shah, the Iran contras, et al), has become our enemy. Pakistan, a "valued ally," is now gradually becoming an enemy. Either we don't seem to learn our lesson, or else we load them up with funds and weapons so that they become convenient chess pieces to use in the bigger scheme of things where it's convenient for us. Only it's not convenient for the typical American being that these theater wars are destroying this empire from the outside in and from the inside out -- sapping our morale, denigrating our international reputation, doing nothing to stop "terrorism" (in fact making it much worse) and destroying our economy.

How could I forget Anwar Al Awlaki, the man apparently associated with some of the 911 hijackers, supposedly behind the Christmas day bomber and the Fort Hood shooting was apparently a US (or at least CIA) ally...

What concerns me about this is a report I got today that Saudi military vehicles with Saudi crews may have been involved in shooting at protesters in Bahrain. I'm not sure I like the idea of us arming repressive regimes so they can crack down on their own people, or send their forces to help crack down on unarmed protesters in a neighboring country.
