The only reason she can take the job is because people will hate a woman less for not doing it. Women are good at keeping up appearances and shouting slogans, after all.

Here's the reason no men applied for the position: They knew that there was no point in taking it, because if they did, they'd either be killed or end up in the employ of the drug gangs themselves. That always happens when local authorities cannot or will not enforce the law against violent criminals operating in their area. That post should have remained empty as a damning testament against the Mexican government, but the Mexican government is always willing to keep up appearances while their own people die. As this new girl no doubt will.

No matter how many meaningless and ineffective social programs for public niceness are effected.

I figure that dealing with drug criminals on a local level is a part of a chief of police's job. So this woman is only going to be doing part of her job from the get-go.

However, it's more than any of the male local yokels are willing to step up to the plate for. Rather than sitting back on her heels and pissing and moaning about how she can't do the whole job, she is going to do the part of it she thinks she can.

I figure that credits her with more testicular fortitude than her male counterparts. It's only natural. In a herd without stallions, a mare is going to be the boss and the geldings are going to call themselves brave for chasing flies with their tails.

Nice turn of a phrase there! And from a woman to boot! Who would have figured? (that was sarcasm btw) Nicely done m'am.
