I don't strive to be like my hero's. I can only be myself. I do hold certain people in high regard and do consider them hero's of progress, communication, ingenuity research, and charity. For these traits I would promote J. Craig Venter, Steven Pinker, Dean Kamen, Niles A. Pierce et. al., and Bill Gates respectively.

Niles A Pierce is a new addition for me. Read his team's PNAS article titled Selective cell death mediated by small conditional RNAs

Dean Kamen has worked extensively on building robotic prosthetic arms that can be controlled in a variety of ways.

Yeah. Sorry I really don't have any heroes. I'm too interested in self-actualization to care about being like anyone else. I respect the achievements of many people, but I'm not looking to them as people to model myself after.

I think you are mistaking hero for hero worship.

Strangely enough, I'd consider Jesus to be more of a hero for me (in a philosophical way) than Darwin. I'm not a biology fan, and if Darwin hadn't come along then others would have put together the theories before long.

As far as people I've met go, I wouldn't really count any of them as my personal heroes.

I am a theist, and Charles Darwin is in the top ten. Ghandi, and Martin Luther King are up there. I will comment on heroes more later.

Also demihero props for Douglas Adams. I love his work but find it ironic that as an atheist he was compelled to conceive of the Infinite Probability Drive in order to explain the serendipity of the universe. He actually succeeds in undermining his own world view. In the Holistic Detective series, Dirk Gently deduces from an "impossible" archaeological anachronism that time travel "must" be possible. A classic double standard for an atheist. I think it was something like the discovery of a salt shaker baked inside of a greek vase. A poor conflicted soul. He was entertaining because he was honest.

Your post allowed me to reflect upon how lucky I am that I have people to look up to that help me in my own self-actualization based on how they are living their lives and making a difference. Sometimes I need to read/hear/see how selfless someone else is living their lives and the impact it has on others to note how little I'm doing in that aspect. An example would be Heidi Bakers work in Mozambique, Corrie ten Boom, Brother Yun, Ahn Ei Sook, my own mother....A hero is someone who has distinguished courage or ability, admired for brave deeds and noble qualities. I wish these characteristics weren't rare (or perhaps we don't hear much about people like this) but these people give of themselves and anyone who does that for the benefit of mankind, regardless of race, gender or religious affiliation, such as the people I've stated, are heroes to humanity. The self absorbed intellectuals are a dime a dozen.
