There have long been rumors about how when he lived in Chicago Barack Obama visited gay bathhouses, but now a new biography of Obama by David Garrow (the author of the Pulitzer Prize Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Martin Luther King Jr., and senior adviser for Eyes on the Prize, the award-winning PBS television history of the Civil Rights Movement) called Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, says that while a young man the former president "considered gayness." That is Obama once considered same-sex relationships as an option for himself.
According to Garrow, three years after having a close relationship with an openly gay assistant professor named Lawrence Goldyn at Occidental College (which Obama attended), Obama "wrote somewhat elusively to his first intimate girlfriend that he had thought about and considered gayness, but ultimately had decided that a same-sex relationship would be less challenging and demanding than developing one with the opposite sex."
This of course as ignited a firestorm among some in the gay community since it reinforces the idea that someone "chooses" to be gay -- but then again it should be noted that Obama was born indecisive.
