I think what weirds people out is Macron met his wife while he was 15 (she was nearly 40) and his parents worked to discourage the inappropriate relationship.

Don't forget that she was his teacher at school, his parents initially thought he was in love with her daughter (a classmate), and she refused to discontinue the relationship when his parents asked her to. It's not about the age gap alone, but about the abuse of a position of responsibility and care by her.

Would those people who want to handwave this away be OK if their sexes were reversed? If the new French President was a woman whose husband was 25 years older, and her teacher when they began their relationship? Who was married with three teenage children at the time?

As to the rest - the laws are in place to prevent an abuse of privilege, responsibility, and trust. The responsible person seeing the way things were going should be expected to leave a bit of space and time before entering into a relationship - but frowning on an age gap is rather lame.
