      Scripture Misapplication: A Rant

Anyone else experience any frustration with misapplied scripture? I believe most often it is done out of ignorance but there are times when it seems quite intentional. And I realize that I too am guilty of this very thing at times though at the moment I'm finding it difficult to think of an example. With that said, I really have a few scriptures in mind that I want to seriously rant about

Psalm 23 - I lost my brother a few months ago unexpectedly and this was the scripture my mom picked to be on his memorial/obituary. I know why she picked it and I know how most people interpret it, I just think it is heavily misapplied. I believe it has little actually to do with the Psalmist having no fear of physical death but rather walking through spiritual darkness and trusting God to guide him.

2 Peter 1:20 - I don't personally believe the passage is telling us that scripture cannot be interpreted privately. I believe it's addressing the notion that it was not given from the private interpretation of those who spoke or wrote prophetically but rather from men who were inspired by God.

There are a couple to start us off. I honestly intended to put "A Lighthearted Rant" in the title and to keep the thread humorous but...well, I'm just not funny. I just like to laugh a lot. So if you have some that you want to share either seriously or humorously, I'd love to hear them.
If I have a mystical experience, an experience that's so overwhelming that I know now that there's a God, the cognitive fallout from that is irrelevant. The fact that that experience can be explained by psychologists in numerous ways is irrelevant to the fact that I now know.

The bible teaches us to be careful drivers:

      2 Kings 9:20
The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac.”

There won't be any women in heaven!

Rev 8: 1 When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

Just came across this one the other day and thought this is where we get the acronym "smh". Psalm 44:14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

I didn't read it in the KJV but it does it better justice for this thread.

I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you.

Great ones John! Well, with the exception of Rev 8:1. LOL!

Isaiah 46:8-11. God is speaking of declaring the end from the beginning....the things He will do and bring to pass (His counsel), not ours..

The passage in Jeremiah where it states that God has a plan for you, to make you prosper and not to harm you, etc is often given at graduations, but honestly, that was a promise to Jeremiah. God's plan for you might be to be thrown into a concentration camp for refusing to capitulate, or to be stricken with a terminal disease, or all manner of nasty things.

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'

'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

      Re: Scripture Misapplication: A Rant

I hear ya, Manwe. That reminds me of Jeremiah 1:5 where God tells Jeremiah that He knew him before He formed him in the womb and even tells us what exactly that means....that He had placed a calling on Jeremiah's life to be a prophet. So often though, people fail to quote entire verses when they misapply scripture.

Peter was too drowsy to help Jesus guard a Rolex.

Matthew 26:40--"Then [Jesus] returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. 'Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?' he asked Peter."

That was just bad. So bad it was a sin. A sinbad, if you will.
