    Speechless

    My initial email:

    Greetings;

You’ve been granted access to the Preferred Name lookup tool.
With this tool you enter a PID, hit enter, and it will display the name of the student.

To install the application please do the following:

1: Navigate to the folder: G:\Software\MSU\PreferredNameLookup
2: Click on the setup.exe icon
3: Let me know if you have any problems.

    -Meh Gerbil

    The Response:

    Meh Gerbil,

Where is the G:\Software….. file located? I tried in Excel, Word, internet and cannot fund that link there. Can you please help/assist me in finding access to this, please.

Start -> Run -> copy and paste? DOS isn't really needed, just basic computer skills...

    Gerbz,

when this happens to me at work, I just think of it as job security. As long as people like this are there, you have a job.

You guys do realize that what was 'basic skills' ten years ago is now done by the computer (user friendly - like HiFi - is a term of the past). Give it five more years and most kids in college won't know what a start button is.

That's where I learned about how to parse file paths into drive letters and folders (then called directories).

Now that I think about it, learning MS-DOS might a bit overkill. Windows Explorer would be sufficient for learning how to navigate between drives and folders.

The thread title made me think of this:

My version of Windows doesn't have 'Run' when I bring up start.
    I'm probably drive-by posting.
