Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

  • my corny testimony thread

I've had a lot going on for the past year, and the last six months especially. This is more or less a "what God's been doing in my life" thread. (At least I recognize when I sound corny.)

I recently joined an accountability group, which now makes two.

The first one is on Tuesday mornings before work: this group has four 60+ guys in it who've been meeting like this for over 15 years, a guy in his 40's, and then me (I'm 28). It's a pretty laid-back group; we talk about whatever we want to talk about, and if one of us has a heavy topic to bring up in confidence, he does. We've talked about some pretty heavy things.

The other group is early on Saturday mornings, with myself and three other guys around my own age. This group is more structured, so that we actually have a list of questions we ask each other about our actions the previous week. (e.g., have you handled your finances right, have you withheld forgiveness from anyone, have you exposed yourself to anything sexually alluring, etc.) Each guy takes a turn going through the list, and then one of the others prays for him.

The first group is an encouragement to me, because I get to talk to older guys who have "walked the walk" for a long time. There's one piece of advice that keeps popping up, and it's this: persevere. Or, "do the next right thing." That advice has been something of an anchor for the last year.

The second group is beneficial because I know that at the end of the week I'm going to be asked pointed questions, by guys who will take a turn answering the same questions, about my actions during that week. It helps keep me honest.

I'm blessed beyond measure. That's corny, but I mean it. I have a lot on my plate, and a lot that stresses me out, but I'm increasingly optimistic.

I've started praying recently something along the lines of, "make me humble." There's a recurring joke in Christian circles about not asking for that, (because you might just get it), but I ask it knowing full well what I'm asking. If being humble means that God has to humble me one way or another, then that's what I'm asking for.

I might post more later, as I think of it.

Mods: Please move this to the Padded Room.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

I had an accountability group at a previous job. I lost it of course when the economy died and I was laid off. I've been looking for a replacement ever since with no luck.

The key to the Christian walk isn't in never falling down; the key is that when we fall down, we get back up.
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

I've tried believe me. No one shows up, or they quit coming.

                .

Been there. Had the meeting where no one else showed up. Had people leave and then months later tell me it was because it wasn't ministering to them.

I think the reasons mine failed is I wasn't ready to lead a group and zero pastoral support.

Points to you for trying. Sorry it didn't work out.

I'm hoping as more guys get interested in Kairos, that I may be more successful in the future. Kairos is built on the Prayer and Share/Accountability model. And I now have about 6 guys interested in getting involved with Kairos at my church.
