Re: OCA and ROCOR celebrate the Divine Liturgy together
It may not be the first time that priests from each jurisdiction have concelebrated, but it's great to see both hierarchs together.

Re: OCA and ROCOR celebrate the Divine Liturgy together
I don't understand . . . could someone please explain why this event is significant? Is this not simply the heads of two branches of Orthodoxy celebrating the Divine Liturgy together? Were they previously enemies in internal Orthodox politics or something like that?

Amen.

Re: OCA and ROCOR celebrate the Divine Liturgy together
The jurisdictions were not in communion for several decades. As I understand it, the ROCOR (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) broke communion with Moscow (and thus with the other Orthodox jurisdictions, which did not) after the Communist Revolution because they felt the Patriarch of Moscow was a puppet of the communist government (more or less). The ROCOR rejoined communion with Moscow in 2007.
The OCA (Orthdox Church in America) originated as a missionary endeavor in the Americas by the Patriarchate of Moscow.Last edited by One Bad Pig; May 31st 2011 at 10:22 PM.

Re: OCA and ROCOR celebrate the Divine Liturgy together
That is wonderful news - They were indeed in Communion, following the reuniting of the Moscow Patriarchate with ROCOR, but to have this concelebration with all the involved heads is glorious indeed - There are issues in the OCA that Metropolitan Jonas is working to heal and resolve, and this concelebration may well be a part of the effort, and a step toward additional unity between them...

How serious are the obstacles to ending their divisions ?

Re: OCA and ROCOR celebrate the Divine Liturgy together
With this tri-concelebration, for both the OCA and ROCOR are Russian,
and the MP is historically the origin of both, they are no longer serious at all...
At issue, perhaps, is the evangellization of the west by Orthodoxy...
It is a canonical mess now, with immigrant churches each running their own
Old Country ethnic parishes... With the ingress of converts by Americans,
this is becoming less and less tenable, and because Russia was the first
to evangellize the Americas [in Alaska], the territory is hers to run...
And indeed this was the case until the Communists took over the Church in Russia...
Then, and especially with the attack of the Moscow Church on the ROCOR Church
in the '50s in San Francisco, where St. John had to spend a lot of time in court
defending charges he had stolen funds, the two have been at odds...
Patriarch Alexy of the MP had been approached by one of the bishops of the OCA
prior to the reunification of the MP with ROCOR, and was asked to declare ROCOR
to be "Without Grace"... His reply, which opened the way for reunification with ROCOR,
was this: "The Church that produced NEVER!"
But that old leadership is gone now, and Metropolitan Jonas of the OCA is a wonderful partiarch
And he is administering the healing salves of salvation to the OCA
For the succeeding leadership had significantly defaulted, and the parishes were running themselves...
But now they are getting better, and this concelebration is, I should think,
Both a tribute to and a medicine for that recovery from a lack of leadership...
And I could be all wet - That is only my little uninformed opinion...
But I love Metropolitan Jonas...
