- Low death rate - i.e. relative surety that those children you do have will survive to old age and thus a lack of necessity to have excess children in order to try and make sure that despite a high mortality rate that some do survive to old age
- The ability to choose not to have children (e.g. availability of contraceptives)
- Financial security in old age (e.g. due to pension plans / superannuation / compulsory savings) - so that it is not necessary to have children to look after you in old age like it is in 3rd world nations
Plenty of scientific studies show that childless couples are happier. So it's hardly surprising that if people don't have a financial need to have children, and have access to birth control, that they will often choose to use it to have a happier life.
It isn't surprising that when you teach a population that having kids makes them 'breeders' and that a woman's place is in the boardroom
