Question Hackers: How much of a threat are they?

As a PC user like everyone here I am concerned about my security. I am disturbed enough by the 'smalltime' groups like the ones who hacked the PlayStation Network, as I was a user of PSN. These groups are generally very juvenile and very scuzzy. But I want to know from experienced computer and security experts, regarding how much damage can these groups do, and how capable is current PC security at stopping them? Any resource material on how to counter hacking attacks? I am currently using Ubuntu-Linux if that matters, but I want to know how to be secure. Also, how big of a threat is hacking in the world today in general?
