China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
This is getting very little play in the US press--I didn't see anything in the local newspaper--but I read that India's press is giving it heavy coverage.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Probably a bluff. They know that the US is self-destructing inside and out. They know that the dollar is on the brink of collapse. All they need to do is position themselves economically, like they've been doing, making deals with the BRIC countries and the like, sit back, brace themselves for the horrible global impact, and wait for it to happen. Then once it happens, they move in and take over US assets at cheap prices. On the downside, US has nukes and may actually become more dangerous and unpredictable (than they already are) when that happens.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Problem is, the US is already well placed internally for a gentle external tap to send them plummeting. China can't be unaware of this, and probably see this stuff in Pakistan as a direct threat to them (which isn't impossible, given the position this would place a potential aggressor in). Such a statement as this draws a line in the sand, after which they can claim to be justified in counter measures. Their best course might be economic, using sanctions or the like, but it would come back to cultural imperatives at that point.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Is China trying to preserve the Westphalian system? The US incursions into Pakistan are undeniably violations of sovereignty. I am unsure whether or to what extent China has a vested interest in preserving a strict system of state sovereignty, but I suppose it's possible that there is more to Chinese intentions than securing rights to the huge mineral resources of the region.
Disregard the above.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Those neocons, I think, really have been trying to conquer the world. China, Russia, India, Brazil, and others do not want to be a part of the American empire. That is sufficient explanation, I think.
Perhaps many historians will identify the ultimatum as a historic moment.

Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with yearling calves? 7. Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8. He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord demands of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d.

Another factor might be that, in effect, China loaned us the money to engage in the other two wars we're in. They may just not want to fund another -- particularly not against another country that they're also loaning money to.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Nick:
China would loose any open war with the United States. It's true that the US would be hard pressed to take and hold China (virtually impossible unless we used Nukes); but China's 300 million man army won't do them any good if they can't get them accross the Atlantic Ocean.....they can't. They don't even have an Aircraft carrier.
China is certainly becoming a nation to be respected. And they are powerful. But while America's power and influence is certainly in the decline, it could squash China's military like a bug (or like a lof bugs).
Cheers,

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Could all just be a lot of sabre-rattling surely?
Clinton makes a statement warning that China's computer-hacking could be a serious breach, or words to that effect. A couple of days later it is reported that there are concerns that the IMF has been hacked - gee, I wonder who's behind that.
China responds with this crap.
This sort of tittle-tattle goes on all the time.
Remember when former-president Bush queried some Russian election results? (I'm not being rhetorical - it didn't get a lot of press attention so you might not recall it.) Putin responded by alleging that Bush stole the 2000 election - again, it wasn't widely reported. Just sabre-rattling.
Whatever your beliefs - whether Agnostic or Atheist, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Mormon, Muslim, Pagan, Pantheist, Rastafarian, Shinto, Taoist or Zoroastrian - whatever you believe, most other people in the world don't share your beliefs, so speak your 'truth' with some humility.

Re: China Ultimatum Against USA attacking Pakistan
Bill Kristol wants to take over the world? An adviser that has never run for political office. The highest office he has served in is - in fact - Chief of Staff to Vice President Quayle.
Sorry, but nobody's taking over the world as chief of staff to the VP. Quite frankly, even if he is trying to take over the world, he's doing such a bad job at it then we don't even need to worry about 'im.
Do yourself a favor: go to cracked and look up "5 pathetic groups that people think rule the world". It's a pretty good primer on why people find "international conspiracies" to be a joke. (not that there aren't international conspiracies, just that even those that are, are so incompetent there's nothing to worry about)"One develops a cool and ironic sense of bitter humor, as well as a bloated ego, and this personality characteristic is the defining trait of atheists ancient and modern. Oh, I see the problem. What I should have said in the first place: The neocons want one-world government with the USA preferably in the lead. Something like that.
