Re: Poll: Subscriber perks?
I'm not sure this is a good idea. If you have another debate area that only subscribers can see, then a large chunk of the threads will be posted there and it will make the visible forum look much slower than it actually isIs a private debate area acceptable?
The "problem" here is that its very easy to use your own smileys by just hotlinking to them off a photobucket or something. Why not give people the opportunity to add a smiley they like to the official theologyweb smiley list, if only guaranteed for six months or so? I've seen this work on other websites, but it's not recurring. Make it fifteen dollar donation per emoticon or something like thatIs limiting custom smilies acceptable?
I wish it wasn't but it seems frighteningly reasonable! Is limiting images or videos acceptable?

Yes - or maybe some other way for a subscriber to customize their postbox? Or maybe their signature> Like with a faint background image or something? Not sure if that is possible with the software, just an idea. Cosmetic things to make your stuff stand out without being overwhelming and without being necessary for full access to threadsIs giving a special coloured name acceptable?
I wish I could subscribe now but I'm really short on money. I will as soon as some kind soul gives me a part time job, though

I think that not obviously separating out subscribers from non-subscribers is a good idea, for the reasons you mentioned - impartiality is hard enough as is. Getting ads up as soon as possible is a priority, imo - that's a fair bit of income especially for a huge site like this.

Re: Poll: Subscriber perks?
I'd rather any perks be non-obvious; less restrictive limits for avatar/smilie file size, have their post approve/disapprove points enhanced, more custom smilies allowed, that sorta thing.

Re: Poll: Subscriber perks?
I definitely like the idea of bigger file sizes for avatars, and maybe even the custom smilies. I have tried making some custom smilies in the past and constantly ran into problems trying to fit them in the file size limit.
plus stuff like that doesn't really effect the functionality of the site to those who don't subscribe, so there is no reason to be jealous or anything about it.
another question would be would there be different perks for different levels of subscription? maybe $5/month gets you extra size avatars, $10 gets you that plus no advertising, etc.

Re: Poll: Subscriber perks?
I don't see anything wrong with giving extra bells & whistles to people that pay. Free content could just receive the basic service. Many sites already do this.
However, the content of posts made shouldn't be dependent on payment.Micah 6:6. With what shall I come before the Lord, bow before the Most High G-d? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with yearling calves? 7. Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8. He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord demands of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d.
