Eminem's new "We As Americans" - a song fit for DivineOb
Eminem wishes 'president dead'
- Shock rapper Eminem has President Bush in his sights in his new song "We as Americans," apparently wishing he were dead.
According to the Drudge Report, the nation's top-selling rapper rants:
"F--- money. I don't rap for dead presidents. I'd rather see the president dead. It's never been said, but I set precedents and the standards and they can't stand it. ... We as Americans. Us as a citizen. We've got to protect ourselves ..."
No stranger to controversy, the Detroit rapper has come under fire for a recently uncovered tape from 1993 in which he uses racial slurs against black women. Eminem dismisses the tape as "foolishness," just an angry reaction to being dumped by his black girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Eminem's "Lose Yourself" has been nominated for song and record of the year by the 46th annual Grammy Awards to be presented Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.
As the feature track in the film "8 Mile," the song has already pulled down an Oscar. It's also up for best rap song and song written for a motion picture, television or other visual media.
The song's breakthrough success at the Oscars is credited for boosting rap music for the first time into contention for one of the four general-category Grammy Awards that are considered the top honors in the U.S. music business.

- Eminem is a blight upon all musical professions. And not just because he's a rapper.
- I feel slightly dirty having him "on my side" against the president. I think I'll go wash my hands now. (No, I don't think the president should be killed for being a dolt, just removed from office.)"In better times, we even had laws prohibiting homosexual behavior enev [sic] though we had the Bill of Rights at that time." - Kewlie

Some of his stuff is catchy, but he comes across as a broken record a lot of times. He's gonna have to keep raising the bar to continue his shtick as being offensive and against pop culture.

Down upon their heads

The phrase "I'd rather be boiled alive" doesn't mean "I'd like to be boiled alive" - it means I'd prefer it to the alternative. In this case he's saying that he won't choose his material to make money, and using the usual colloquial expression. So no, he's not saying he'd like to see Mr Bush dead.Today @ 05:13 PM post located here

If Eminem had sung, I'd rather be dragged naked through a briar patch, would you interpret him to say he'd like to be dragged naked through a briar patch. Of course, it's not that simple and the contrast might be seen as telling, but the literal interpretation propounded in this thread is more than the lyric will bear.
If you can look past the obscenities, Eminem is one of the most linguistically creative popular artists working today. Here it seems he's been too smart for poor little Jinxy, who misses the point of anything more complicated than Dr Suess with a reliability it's hard to credit.

Nice spin, D. "That's what he said, but it's not what he meant." Based on what? Are you Eminem? Are you a mind-reader?
And I knew you couldn't post without resorting to a lame ad hominem attack against me.

But for the record I see *G*'s interpretation as plausible (if not likely). I expect that, when spoken, where Eminem puts pauses would clarify his meaning significantly.

Linguistically creative? If by that you mean completely ignorant as to meter, rythym, rhyme, vocabulary and cogent thought process, then by all means, yes he is.
But since that is not what you meant, at least I don't think that is what you meant, then no he is not. He is pedantic, puerile, and almost illiterate."Yes, I'm quite concerned about health care issues surrounding leaked radiation from Japan. Now, please pass me my super sized, bacon double cheeseburger, combo meal..."

My most recent faith struggle is not one of intellect. I don't really do that anymore. Sooner or later you just figure out there are some guys who don't believe in God and they can prove He doesn't exist, and some other guys who can prove He does exist, and the argument stopped being about God a long time ago and now it's about who is smarter, and honestly, I don't care. ~ Don Miller Blue Like Jazz

GEOCHRON, GET AN AVATAR!!!
(And consider that post directed at you. Funny how the line about expecting ad homs still works.
It'd work for other skeptic-oriented posters, too. Must come with the territory.)

Ooookay.

December 7th 2003, 03:58 AM #11Language is less expressive when viewed in a written format than when spoken. For example, sarcasm may be difficult or impossible to pick out when one only reads the text. My assumption is that, based on how Eminem speaks the lyrics you posted, his meaning will be clear.

The concept itself is extreme and unhealthy.
The problem with popular and famous figures is that they do have their fans who imitate them. I can easily see an influencable and unstable Eminem's "worshipper" who would interpret those words as a call to execute that wish.
As fanatic religious folks have killed in the name of God, I can see the risk with fanatic admirers of a pop artist to kill in his name.
