The Language of Death
Fell asleep in the Lord? I hope he rose t new life in the Lord!"Yes, I'm quite concerned about health care issues surrounding leaked radiation from Japan. Now, please pass me my super sized, bacon double cheeseburger, combo meal..."
When I was young I admired clever people. Now that I'm older I admire kind people.~Rabbi Abraham Heschel
My most recent faith struggle is not one of intellect. I don't really do that anymore. Sooner or later you just figure out there are some guys who don't believe in God and they can prove He doesn't exist, and some other guys who can prove He does exist, and the argument stopped being about God a long time ago and now it's about who is smarter, and honestly, I don't care. ~ Don Miller Blue Like Jazz

The Language of Death
In a recent post here at TWeb an Archbishop in the Orthodox Church was remembered. The article linked to in the thread had this to say about the Bishop:
(Bold added by me.)
So my thinking is this: why do we try to anesthetize death with such vague language? At the very least one would hope that death here does not mean an eternal slumber in the presence of the divine, right?
Why do we insist on using language that at the same time diminishes the pain of death and misses the joy that the next life will be?"Yes, I'm quite concerned about health care issues surrounding leaked radiation from Japan. Now, please pass me my super sized, bacon double cheeseburger, combo meal..."

Re: The Language of Death
In this case isn't this type of language used in the Bible? Perhaps tradition here . . . but in general there are a lot of euphemisms used for things that . . . well that some seem to think need circumspection when mentioning like the powder room for the bathroom.
Why I'm not sure . .. I could only guess that it is an attempt to lessen any emotional response by people. Thus we refer to casualties rather than blown up soldiers . . .

Re: The repose of Archbishop Dmitri.
Yes. Why is this language surprising? See Matt. 27:52, Acts 7:60, Acts 13:36, 1 Cor 15:6, 1 Thes. 4:13, 2 Pet 3:4 . . .
Um, Pa? That won't occur for most people until the general resurrection. The Theotokos, Mary, is the exception rather than the rule.I hope he rose t new life in the Lord!

Re: The Language of Death
We use such language because people like Jesus, Luke (in Acts), Paul (in 1 Cor, 1 Thes), and Peter (2 Peter 3:4) used it. Nowhere does it imply that death is "an eternal slumber in the presence of the divine." Where did you pull that out of? The language of sleep implies that we will one day wake up, emphasizing that death is NOT final.

Re: The Language of Death
Anethetizing death plays into the game of the afterlife. While some believe there is life and after that nothing, others call death a transition from life 1 to afterlife 2. Side stepping the Death as the end is a favored tactic of theism and basically no one wants to die.
