Re: No Higgs Boson?
I refuse to take sides in this. I know that hard feelings have developed here on tWeb over the years. Perhaps I will take a similar view to MS and Sparko sooner or later.
What I posted was just my reaction at this particular time as a tWeb member.

Re: No Higgs Boson?
The end of the universe?
While browsing physicsweb this morning, I came across this remarkable blog concerning the search for the Higgs boson;
Extracted from
http://blog.vixra.org/2011/12/04/wha...5-gev-tell-us/
“It has been known for about twenty years that for a low Higgs mass relative to the top quark mass, the quartic Higgs self-coupling runs at high energy towards lower values. At some point it would turn negative indicating that the vacuum is unstable. In other words the universe could in theory spontaneously explode at some point releasing huge amounts of energy as it fell into a more stable lower energy vacuum state. This catastrophe would spread across the universe at the speed of light in an unstoppable wave of heat that would destroy everything in its path. Happily the universe has survived a very long time without such mishaps so this can’t be part of reality, or can it?”
The good news is that if indeed the universe was destroyed this way, we would know nothing about it.

Re: No Higgs Boson?
I do not get that out of whatever. It is a sincere question. The proposal of the existence of the Higgs Boson to based on a prediction to explain observation scientists have made concerning the nature of matter and energy. If the Higgs Boson is found to exist it will confirm the prediction. If the higgs Boson is found to not exist, scientist will continue to search for other explanations. It has not yet been determined that the Higgs Boson does not exist. It is similar in a away to the prediction of the existence of Black Holes. The prediction of the existence of Black Holes was based on observations concerning the the behavior of objects in space and other theoretical considerations, before Black Holes were known to exist.
Again what is the issue or the importance as to whether Higgs Bosons exist or not? The question is for sparko too. Calling it the "God Particle,' is an unfortunate loony layman's notion concerning this problem, and kind of meaningless to the scientific issues at hand.Last edited by shunyadragon; December 11th 2011 at 06:51 PM.

Re: No Higgs Boson?
This sentence makes no sense.
Well since no one was making it a theological issue, your question makes no sense. It is a sincere question.

If the Higgs Boson is found to exist it will confirm the prediction. If the higgs Boson is found to not exist, scientist will continue to search for other explanations. No one arguing. You wasted your time writing that paragraph.
There is no issue. The only one who's attempted to turn it into an issue is you (and maybe little monkey like 3 months ago). So, you're only fighting shadows.Again what is the issue or the importance as to whether Higgs Bosons exist or not?
That's nice. The question is for sparko too. Calling it the "God Particle,' is an unfortunate loony layman's notion concerning this problem, and kind of meaningless to the scientific issues at hand.

Re: No Higgs Boson?
What's your problem, Adrift? You've started out with an OP that clearly makes fun of science, and scientists, quoting Hawkins, and what seems to you like a futile pursuit of the Higgs particle, even referring to it as the derogatory 'God particle', but then when people have pointed out your silliness, your answer is, "there is no issue." Do you ever understand what comes out of your silly mind?

Re: No Higgs Boson?
The issue is not in my mind. This is a well-known fact that theists make fun of science, whether it's on evolution, climate change, and this, the search for the Higgs particle. It is their way of undermining science because many of the scientific findings have gone against their cherish beliefs. And this thread is typical of that condescension.
