Re: October 2011 Screwballs
Seen it before. Atheists no more about other faiths, but Christians know the most about Christianity.
Crab Battle
noun
Words uttered to incite an all in brawl. Whoever says the words 'Crab Battle' will usually be spear tackled to the ground by anyone else present, and all parties will then engage in a fight to the death.
Reality untouchable, transparent, invisible to our fixed, restricted fields of vision. Existence taken for granted, absolute. Possessed, owned, controlled by the common sense-infected rational gaze, onward forever we walk among the ignorant. Never stray from the common lines.

Some guy on IMDb keeps pointing to this to say that atheists know more about Christianity than Christians.

Re: October 2011 Screwballs
Exactly what Rational Gaze said. If he/she is using it to say that Atheists know more about Christianity, than he/she obviously did not read the study (since it says the exact opposite). Nothing like an NA who makes appeals to science but doesn't bother to understand it.
"Weinberg's statement is true as far as it goes, but it is not the whole truth. To make it the whole truth, we must add an additional clause: 'And for bad people to do good things—that [also] takes religion.' The main point of Christianity is that it is a religion for sinners. Jesus made that very clear. When the Pharisees asked his disciples, "Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?" he said, "I come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance." Only a small fraction of sinners repent and do good things but only a small fraction of good people are led by their religion to do bad things."

Re: October 2011 Screwballs
If that's the case than why do so many atheists extol the virtues of private Catholic schools or other religious academies (guys like Baggini, no less)? Answer: because those atheists aren't a pack of ideological fanatics like the NAs and recognize a superior education when they see one, no matter where it comes from.
(Of course, coming from an NA, it is no surprise he/she said "false religion", obviously intending to indoctrinate his/her own children into their own religion "fanatical atheism")."Weinberg's statement is true as far as it goes, but it is not the whole truth. More fallout from my blog post about "Hate" in Luke:
The “appeal to authority” (which you did, when you stated “The information in my post came directly from scholarly sources “) is not in itself evidence of anything, nor it a logical position of any value, since you are only saying, in effect, “someone said.” To which any rational response is “So what?” Why should anyone value scholarly sources in and of themselves – why should their alleged scholarly status afford them any greater status than a valid point in argument?
Please note that the appeal to authority is a logical fallacy.
Try again.Oh, how fun.If you’re very interested in using scholarly authority as a basis for fact, perhaps we could talk about evolution.
The administrator is right, though. The fact that there is an obscure linguistic justification of sorts for some of these passages doesn’t make them less problematic in the hands of your typical Christian. How many Christians today take the time to concern themselves with the fact that the Bible doesn’t tell them to treat homosexuals in a discriminatory manner, and in fact tells them the opposite? How many Christians gave a thought to context when burning witches, taking slaves, subjugating women, and slaughtering children? Why would they bother? The scripture to support their decision is right there in the Bible.CS Lewis, Mere ChristianityThere is no need to be worried by facetious people who try to make the Christian hope of 'Heaven' ridiculous by saying they do not want 'to spend eternity playing harps'. The answer to such people is that if they cannot understand books written for grown-ups, they should not talk about them.

Nomination to this one 17-year old from work who, when he came in to work, goes "wassup? You gettin' any of them Bible College ladies?" And then proceeded to exclaim how he wants to get in bed with a pastor's daughter at some point in his life just for the experience, like his buddy did to some Pentecostal girl.
Sometimes I wish fire and brimstone would just rain down on Western civilization."Everybody wants to go to heaven. They just don't want God to be there when they get there." Paul Washer

If there's anything I've learned in my time on the Internet, there's no such thing as being too stupid to argue with people on the Internet.

Don't worry about not being good at polemical stuff. If you love God with all your heart, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself, you're doing exactly what God expects of you.Disregard the above.
