Occupy Wall Street protesters said yesterday that packs of brazen crooks within their ranks have been robbing their fellow demonstrators blind, making off with pricey cameras, phones and laptops -- and even a hefty bundle of donated cash and food.

“Stealing is our biggest problem at the moment,” said Nan Terrie, 18, a kitchen and legal-team volunteer from Fort Lauderdale.

“I had my Mac stolen -- that was like $5,500. Every night, something else is gone. Last night, our entire [kitchen] budget for the day was stolen, so the first thing I had to do was . . . get the message out to our supporters that we needed food!”

Crafty cat burglars sneaked into the makeshift kitchen at Zuccotti Park overnight and swiped as much as $2,500 in donated greenbacks from right under the noses of volunteers who’d fallen asleep after a long day whipping up meals for the hundreds of hungry protesters, the volunteers said.

I don't understand why people determined to spread the wealth would be so upset when some of their wealth was redistributed. You'd think they would volunteer for something like that. I mean it seems fairly obvious that the wealthier people down there have laptops and the poorer among them don't, so they simply redistributed it.

It's the greedy 1% of protesters who want to keep all their computers, gadgets and cash for themselves, while the 99% of protesters have to live off of the land.

Stossel didn't comparing it to the Vietnam War protests. He compared them to the anti-war protests in 2007 and 2008.

I heard a commentator state that unlike the Tea Party, the OWS doesn't have a coherent message since it is still in its infancy as a movement. I don't remember the early history of the Tea Party. Did they have a coherent message at its' start or did it take a few months to coalesce?

I'm pretty sure the foundational message of the Tea Party was "less government, lower taxes". In fact, their NAME implies that - from the Boston Tea Party. Taxation without representation, and all that.

That was me, and I noted that they don't have a coherent message at all. Where they are in their development is immaterial, although they have been going for several months. This is not stopping them from developing one at a later date, however.

Ah, ok... and it's kind of odd for a bunch of people to do all that "demonstrating" before they even know what they're about.

The Tea Party began demonstrations IN ORDER to get their message out.

3. shortly before I had to leave, Joel laid out a pair of scenarios about people who either save their money or spend it, and whether one or the other really controls more wealth than the other. While I acknowledge that there is viable reasoning here, I do not think that it is applicable to our current situation. It assumes that 99% of America is too stupid to understand that, if you save your money, you'll have it when you need it, while the 1% with hundreds of times the salary and net worth of the rest are just that rich because they're marginally more prudent in their spending habits. I find that proposition slightly strange. Yes, let's call it strange.

What I was arguing against was the idea that just because someone "controls" (i.e., owns) wealth (or "too much" wealth) that they are somehow bad or "greedy" or uncharitable or inordinately love material pleasures or some such thing. That does not follow.


I did not say that my scenario describes the cause of the current situation. I said that the current state of affairs (of unemployment and huge inequality) is largely due to government intervention, particularly in banking.

In addition to lower taxes (as I recall, the first Tea Parties were tax-day protests), one prominent message was "stop the bailouts."
They also seemed to spring up out of and shortly following the first End the Fed protests.

I'm willing to believe that no small proportion of the American population is somewhat imprudent and credulous in financial matters, but I don't see how the top 1% is that much richer just by being marginally smarter.

We're not talking about a "silver bullet/one source" kind of thing here. Being smart HELPS. Otherwise, even if someone was making an income of several million dollars a year, they wouldn't be in the top 1% for long if they lived beyond their means.

And besides that, Abraham Lincoln said that 93% of what you read on the internet is simply not true.

Nah, both of them were on their own.

One of my deacons used to love to ask (jokingly) "Well, is THAT WRITTEN DOWN SOMEWHERE?" when I told him something. So, I would sometimes write it on a piece of paper, stick it in my pocket, THEN make the comment. When he would ask his "Well, is THAT WRITTEN DOWN SOMEWHERE?", I'd whoop out the piece of paper and show it to him, and his response was EXACTLY....

He turns 50 this coming Saturday, and I have been asked to speak at his surprise birthday party -- I had forgotten this little antic, so I'll be sure to include it in my "salute"

You should totally say "[Name] is turning 50 today. And since I know he'd ask if this was written down somewhere... {pull out something with the statement that [name] is turning 50}"
