I don't quite agree - while I am a bit of a craft beer enthusiast, I am willing to recognize that for some, drinking may be sin if they cannot do so in confidence (the "weaker brother" principle), or if they have a past history with alcoholism and feel the need to make a clean break. In this case, the Christian would be perfectly fine to use religious reasoning in his choice not to drink. However, I think what you're saying is that it's unbiblical to say it's inherently wrong for all to drink, and I agree.
Anyways, sorry, I know I'm completely derailing the thread. Personally, I just can't stand the taste of wine.

If someone abstains because they're just not comfortable with the idea of partaking, fine. But to say that something Jesus did is a sin?

I don't see that as religious reasoning.or if they have a past history with alcoholism and feel the need to make a clean break. In this case, the Christian would be perfectly fine to use religious reasoning in his choice not to drink.
Heh. I think dry wine is used to cleanse the palate at fancy meals because by comparison it makes everything else taste better.Anyways, sorry, I know I'm completely derailing the thread. Personally, I just can't stand the taste of wine.
I enjoy sweeter wines though.

I believe it's permissible to drink alcohol, but we need to be careful. For one thing, the ancient world didn't have anything nearly as strong as some of the alcoholic drinks we have and in any case, drunkenness is not fine in any context.

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Re: Wine for people who don't drink wine
I don't think the bible prohibit drinking alcohol.
In NT, Jesus said all food are good and does not defy a person..Paul said one is free in eating and drinking.
However, there are other principles like do not cause a brother to stumble, like is it beneficial for one's health both physical or emotional, like it is for the cause of the gospel, like does it glorify God.
So I think alcohol is those neutral thing or grey areas that it is okay to drink and not to drink,
In Puritan times and middle ages, there are many bad things and vices associated with alcohol and hence drinking is frown upon. It has its cultural background. Now we are in a different time and culture, so one should rethink those issues

Re: Wine for people who don't drink wine
The other night, on ABC news, they had a bit about this. Some 7 or 8 year study had ended, studying alcohol intake and women. Apparently having even one drink / day increased the odds of breast cancer, by something like 15%.
But here is where it gets murky: 1 out of 56 women will die from breast cancer. But 1 out of 3 will die of cardiovascular disease or stroke. And 1 to 3 drinks had a far larger reduction (50+%?) for those risks.
What is one to do with such info? [I will see if I can go find relevant links now.] First, I'd wait for yet more contradictory studies to come out. Secondly, if you don't drink now, that's more for the rest of us.

http://www.todayonline.com/Health/ED...st-cancer-risk
Another link indicated it was 50% risk of cardiovascular disease/stroke. I'd look further, but this computer is acting up...During that period, roughly 7,700 of the women enrolled developed invasive breast cancer. The researchers found that having 5 to 10g of alcohol a day, the equivalent of roughly three to six glasses of wine a week, raised a woman's risk of breast cancer by 15 per cent. The effects were cumulative; with each 10g increase in alcohol consumption per day, the risk climbed 10 per cent.
While such an increase may sound alarming, experts caution that it translates into only a very small risk for the average woman. A typical 50-year-old woman, for example, has a five-year breast cancer risk of about 3 per cent, so a 15-per-cent increase would increase that risk only to 3.45 per cent.
