Since it hasn't been recommended yet... Revelation: Four Views by Steve Gregg is a gem and a half. He goes through the four basic interpretations of Revelation in a parallel commentary format (so you can easily compare and contrast Preterism and Futurism... alongside Historicism and Idealism). Not sure if it's on E-Book, though it's only about $30 in Hardcover format.

I've been reading "The Rapture Exposed" by Barbara Rossing. It is a mixture of criticism of dispensationalism as well as offering a "alternative story" for Christians to follow.

Re: Book recommendations for somebody new to Preterism
Having taken up studying preterism this year, I can say without reservation that it's been one of the most spiritually rewarding experiences I've been blessed to undergo. It really brings the Bible to life in a tangible and authentic way. At present, if I had to recommend a book, it would probably be Ralph Bass's Back to the Future, a commentary on Revelation that covers the preterist gamut pretty extensively. Notwithstanding numerous typos and punctuation errors (if memory serves, a second edition is rumored to be in the works), it makes for a great intro and then some. See the reviews on Amazon and tektonics if you're curious. I'm still making my way through this tome.
Neo-Hymaneanism hardly seems more "consistent" insofar as it decontextualizes Second Coming passages Solo Scriptura-style; which (counter-intuitively) actually shows it to have more common ground with a dispensational futurist approach to scripture.

Fruchtenbaum is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and Cedarville University, so his outlook is likely to be dispensational rather than preterist. Dwight Pentecost is unequivocally a dispensational futurist.
Better resources would be books like:
The Apocalypse Code by Hank Hanegraaff
The Last Days According to Jesus by R. C. Sproul
