"For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do."
Jesus is criticizing them for the progress they made.
So you seem kinda factually ignorant about what the Sadducees and the Pharisees were about. I suggest you read up on the matter rather than relying on half a sentence taken out of context to give you an understanding of an entire culture. The Pharisees are in many, many, ways very similar to modern-day religious conservatives.
In almost every instance in the gospels, Jesus' motivations for his objections to the religious establishment of his day are liberal motivations: Concern for the people they are hurting, concern that their rules and regulations cause harm to poor people.
Rather, it shows that the bible in general, Jesus and Paul in particular, etc. are all sexist, racist and homophobic by liberal standards, while you insisted they actually agree with you on these issues.

I've noticed however that conservatives do tend to deliberately misunderstand and twist the meaning of words like "tolerance" to try and pretend that the very values liberals stand for mean that they're not allowed to stand for things. Funnily enough, educated liberals have a better idea of what their own values entail than do uneducated conservatives who seize on random words, misunderstand them and twist them and then claim "no, no, no, you can't say that because of that other thing you said!" Or, more often, "no, no, no, you can't say that thing because of something some other liberal once said, and my mind can't cope with the possibility that two people who call themselves liberal might have slightly different views."
Meta Knight, well you can be in favor of less freedom and more oppression if you like.

They are consistently more liberal on these issues than the rest of their society, and consistently challenge their society to treat people more equally.
That makes them liberals by the standards of their day. There are logical outworking of their teachings beyond what they themselves necessarily conceived of... for example the bible doesn't ever suggest overturning the political institution of slavery, yet the teachings of equality and love in the bible were a significant source of inspiration for a lot of the abolitionists. The teachings of love and equality in the words of Jesus and Paul continue to inspire many modern liberals."As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths." Isaiah 3:12
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
