JY (sigh) And I don't know where the gun was, he didn't tell me where the... gun was.
The NRA should be all over this. A legal gun owner murdered by teh gubberment for telling the cop he had a legal gun in the car. But, naturally, the NRA hasn't said peep about it. It kind of gives the lie to their "we love the 2nd amendment to defend ourselves from the government" rhetoric and reveals the truth that they have their guns to defend themselves from black people.Last edited by Starlight; 06-20-2017, 06:30 PM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

The law doesn't require that the officer see the weapon but that he have reasonable cause to believe himself endangered. Waiting for the gun to be in full view is also waiting for it to be in position to kill - and that isn't required.
There are problems - big ones - but that isn't one of them.
The NRA won't 'be all over this one' - no one should. It's not clear cut - it's murky. And the 'government' didn't shoot - the officer did. Even under color of authority, the government isn't the cause of a bad decision - no matter whose it was.

I'm flabbergasted at how hard it is to get a police officer convicted of wrongful killing. This looks obviously like the officer wasn't justified in what he was doing. And yet there was no legal trouble for him at all. At best one can say that for the sake of burrying the hatchet, he was let go of his job (with the full admission that he could just go to another department and get hired there).
I have never heard of anything like this in my own country.
If anything this looks like a slam dunk for body cams. Short of that I don't see how any police officer could ever be convicted, unless they plea guilty.

Accussations of emotionalism is a nice way to delegitimize our objection. This can be done in any conversation where any kind of passion is shown. Try telling this to people protesting campus rapes.

But this really isn't Denmark - our laws work a particular way. If it's 'easy' to get a conviction in Denmark then I think very little of your laws. It shouldn't be easy - it should be just. Innocent until proven guilty isn't a slogan - it's the basis of our jurisprudence.
I don't have an issue with body cams in some circumstances - but big issues with them in others. Here, based solely on the transcript you provided, I doubt it would have gotten the result you want. The officer repeated himself multiple times but the gentleman does not evidently comply. The orders weren't as clear as they should have been - but they were clear enough that a reasonable man would conclude the office was ordering him to stop reaching. This is probably where they lost the case.
The whole thing stinks - that the officer wasn't clearer, that the gentleman failed to comply, and mostly that a man died over a stupid traffic stop."He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." - Jim Elliot
