Although I have been citing references for awhile, I became curious whether I am doing it the right way. Are there some good sources to identify conventions regarding the proper page numbers to properly cite a text.

Do you cite the initial page primarily where the first quoted sentence begins?

Or should the initial page indicate where the paragraph of that first quoted sentence begins?

If you quote only one sentence that begins on page 31 and ends on page 32, do you list the sentence as being on pp. 31-32?

Or should multiple pages being listed when the source material has paragraphs that begin on different pages? (So are we addressing the page range that the pericope lies across?)

If the quote of another author in the paper only lies on pg 44 within my sentence that begins on pg 43, should the author index only refer to pg 44?

Maybe the exact details don't really matter. I think I "learned" the basic concepts in middle school, so its been a few years... and I'm running on instincts here.
