Re: Mormons and Masons at Nauvoo
I miss my purple phase. It made it easier to tell my remarks apart from those I was quoting. But I am trying to keep my promise, trying to fight the urge when it seems I should go back to purple mode. Following the 12-step program....

on the faults of other people's religions, she/he is in a bad condition."

I'm proud of you, Jeff. So, how long have you been black*?
*So that nobody thinks I'm being racist (not that that would stop SOME) let me clearly state that I'm referring to the fact that Jeff is typing in BLACK type instead of PURPLE, and I'm likening that to the AA meeting where one would say "I have been sober for 121 days...." (or words to that effect)

Re: Mormons and Masons at Nauvoo
I've read some of Nibley's work I find him confusing. I know Mormon's have this adoration for him as kind of a Father of apologetics but... I find him to be more of a Mad Scientist.
I can give some examples so i am not just name calling but... this man does have issues.

Re: Mormons and Masons at Nauvoo
I have read Mormonism and Early Christianity and Tinkling Cymbals and Sounding Brass cover to cover, and I found all 1000-plus pages fascinating and, many times, entertaining. I did have to re-read some parts several times to grasp the point being made, but that is not Nibley's fault--it was mine, since I lack the education and training that he had.
Also admired by us are Talmage and Roberts.I know Mormon's have this adoration for him as kind of a Father of apologetics but... I find him to be more of a Mad Scientist.
He was the first to admit that he was not perfect. And his son-in-law, when writing the biography of Nibley, made sure to point out that he was not perfect. But I bet that if you wrote as much as Nibley did, there would be people who said that you had issues.I can give some examples so i am not just name calling but... this man does have issues."I think we may accept it as a rule that whenever a person's

Re: Mormons and Masons at Nauvoo
I'm really looking forward to saving up enough money to buy all the volumes of Nibley's collected works.
"If God has given [his people] such joy now, joy in their faith, in their hope, in love, in the truth of his scriptures, what kind of joy is he preparing for them at the end? If he feeds them like this on the journey, how will he feast them in their homeland?"--Augustine of Hippo
"It cannot be that the people should grow in grace unless they give themselves to reading. A reading people will always be a knowing people."--John Wesley
"Wherever men are still theological there is still some chance of their being logical."--G. K. Chesterton
