Oh, well, if Martin Luther said it then it must be true, even if he lived 1500 years after it was written.

Ant the Luther quote was rather truncated from its original.
      2 Tim 2:1-2

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

It is one thing to hope for something, and another thing to have assurance in the thing you hope for. When the Spirit shows us the hidden things, things the natural man cannot see or comprehend,....Like going from a pitch dark room into a room with light, we can now see the things we were told about because we can now see their substance (assurance), and therefore, truly believe.

In this sense, faith is a gift, because it is not natural, meaning it is not something a man naturally possesses therefore, of his own he is not able to see and understand the things of the spirit, there is no substance, spiritual things can only be appraised by the spirit. Now to believe in something and be convicted and to have a living hope, we need the substance (assurance) in order for it, which is a gift of faith. The substance, only God can supply.

Re: Faith according to Hebrews 11:1

      Faith is by reason of truth. (see John 17:17; Romans 10:17.). So faith is the certainty of hope. And in the proof/evidence of that which is eternal (being unseen). {Latter reference not at hand.}
      Truth originates with God.
      Belief originates with truth.
Reason is based in one's beliefs.

"There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the Self Existent Existence." -- Proverbs 21:30.

"For in him we live, and move, and have our being; . . . " -- The Apostle Paul - Acts 17:28.

". . . the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; . . ." -- Romans 1:16.

". . . the gospel . . . how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: . . . " -- 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. " -- John 3:16.

". . . as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name: Who were born, not . . . of the will of man, but of God." -- John 1:12, 13.

"Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: . . ." -- 1 John 5:1.

". . . and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. " -- Hebrews 8:12.

      Hmmm, interesting, you missed it.

Do you think I meant in the physical? I hope not.

Ill leave you with this: though everyone has eyes, not all can see.

Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?..........Mark 8:18.

I was merely commenting on Hebrews 11:1 in and of itself.

Yes, those who were outside the faith, where taught in parables by our Lord. And for that very reason.
