Re: Style of music in worship services
Going into specifics, I really like Keith and Kristyn Getty's modern hymns (In Christ Alone, The Power of the Cross, O Church Arise, Joy Has Dawned etc...) because in addition to being good music (Irish
) they're also theologically rich, unlike most modern 7-11 self-centered Christian music.
O Church Arise is a splendid example of this.

Re: Style of music in worship services
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

I think i'm bothered by "praise team" aspect of modern Churches. I have seen a number of them appear to be in their own little world, totally oblivious that the congretation is not "in tune" with them at all.
You're not "leading" unless there are "followers".

Re: Style of music in worship services
It sounds like your new Associate Pastor is being incredibly insensitive to the worship language of his flock, catering instead to his own preferences. It sounds like this is leading the flock to sinfully grumble against their leaders. What a mess. Any changes in the worship of a church ought to be done gradually, in the context of much explicit discussion of the matter from the pulpit, in discussion groups, etc. A good shepherd knows his sheep. Is the senior pastor asleep at the wheel?

My church went to a two service format last month, with the first service being all old hymns and the second being all contemporary worship. I have to attend the second service because of something I do for the church afterward. I honestly have a strong preference for the older hymns, but don't feel that I have any right to grumble - worship is supposed to be aimed at pleasing God, not us, and I almost feel idolatrous making a big deal out of it.

When I go to church, most days, I don't enjoy kneeling and standing and saying what some would consider rehearsed words, but, I do it out of respect, out of reverance for what brought me to church that day and I discipline and even reprimand myself when I find myself feeling in a slump wishing something were different, for my convenience. My mind would say for example "What's the point of all this getting up, can't I just sit here and enjoy a sermon". I don't enjoy the singing, I really don't. I LOVE when i go to the service with the live music because the duet with the violin and cello does something to my soul, I could have simply heard that and gone home and it would have been fulfilling. I never expect the perfect sermon or mass or service, when I first started going to mass I did and boy was I dissapointed. I get out of it what I can. THEN, when I go home I can worship in a way that fits my soul (so to speak) more personally, I go somewhere alone if I can, I put on Japaneze zen music, i look at the bluejays out of my window or wait for the cardinal to show up, I close my eyes and feel thankful, I pray a personal prayer. It's all we can do really, we're so blessed to be so unique, we can't expect a church to answer to all of our preferences, only to be respectful in the music that it plays and to mix it up a bit and diversify.

What say you all about Christian groups that parody secular songs into Christian songs, like Apologetix?
I have no problem with them, and I in fact think they're awesome, but I'm just curious about other people's opinions.Life is just a phase you're going through. You'll get over it.--Anonymous
