Romney crushes Gingrich in Nevada Primary
Not that this comes as a surprise to anyone...
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/e...000650988.html
But I've got to say, Gingrich is starting to get sad...
Perhaps Newt's already laying the groundwork for his 2016 campaign?Calling himself the true conservative in the race, Gingrich compared himself to Republican titans who fended off moderate challengers in 1964 and 1980. "Reagan had this challenge with John Connally. Goldwater had this challenge with Nelson Rockefeller," Gingrich said, adding, "Reagan lost five straight primaries before he started winning in 1976."
(Ronald Reagan did not, of course, win the Republican presidential nomination in 1976.)

At least Ron Paul sticks these things out for the free air time,
One wonders what Gingrich thinks he's doing

I wish we had a genuine Reagan-conservative running for office.

Wait a sec....
The elections for Reagan were 1980 and 1984. The speech quoted is from 1985 (which means, post election, 2nd term).
Seems a little dubious to compare the entirety of a historical president as "running for Republican office" when to be fair, if things were to play out again, we'd either have A) Reagen's governorship of CA and campaign to judge - or just his first term.
That would be like saying "Oh Woodrow Wilson would never be nominated by today's Democrats - he got us into World War 1."
No election has a complete picture of what the administration will entail. Re: Romney crushes Gingrich in Nevada Primary
You're missing the point. The conservative myth is that Reagan is just like the uber conservatives today. He never was.

Re: Romney crushes Gingrich in Nevada Primary
Indeed -- Reagan's only seen as some sort of conservative hero when compared to the duds who've carried the Republican banner since him; truth is, the GOP has gone so far to the right (and arguably off the deep end) that even their patron saint would be labeled a RINO and kicked to the curb.
And that's a best case scenario -- assuming they don't have any tar and feathers handy.

Re: Romney crushes Gingrich in Nevada Primary
"Just like"? Since when has any conservative pushed that idea? No person is a perfect candidate except yourself. Elections are (supposed to) be about picking a candidate close to your beliefs with flaws and deviations one can live with.
Yeah, it also really annoys me how the MSM does that to Republicans.

Why bother, you people are more invested in your caricatures than dealing with what people actually believe. Re: Romney crushes Gingrich in Nevada Primary
That isn't the vibe you get from the modern Republicans though. Reagan is held up as some sort of conservative ideal. Remember that early presidential debate thing where all the 6 or 7 candidates were asked for their favorite president? They all said reagan. Some of them listed his book.
Why would people like Eric Canton claim he never raised taxes source if not for wanting to ignore the times Reagan didn't act like a modern conservative
The Republican's have been violating the 11th commandment for awhile now and, you know, the poor vote. Politicians are so in control of what they do publically, generally speaking, that gaffe's are percieved as being a window into that stuff that we suspect, but doesn't come out. Then when it does come out we're like "Ahh, this makes so much sense now" and you want people to just ignore that?
The only caricature is viewing Reagan through rose colored glasses.
