Well it seems the LDS leadership has loosened the reins in the last 20 years. The Mormon elders i spoke to in the early/mid 90's were not even allowed, by their own words, to look at any of the books/papers/web sites that i presented them with or directed them too.

If memory serves me correctly - and the LDS folks will flesh this out further here for us - actively serving missionaries are under much tighter restrictions as to what they can read so as to keep them focused on the essentials of the message they're supposed to be spreading.
