And it's not like I am uniquely obsessed by it as if I were an unusual person for being a New Zealander who is strange for having their mouth drop open at US political antics. My best friend, my brother, my father, and my office mates all comment to me weekly about the craziness of US politics because they follow it too. New Zealanders in general are aware of what's going on in the US about a million times more than Americans in general are aware of what's going on in NZ. This is for a variety of reasons including, we're a small nation so we tend to pay a lot of attention to international news because there isn't much local news, we speak English so that attention gets paid primarily to English-speaking nations, it used to get paid to the UK but when they entered the European Common Market several decades back that attention drifted away from the UK and more towards Australia and the US, and as the US took a prominently negative role in world affairs with President Bush jokes / 9/11 / Afghanistan / Iraq / torture / global financial crisis then with the prominently positive role of electing a Black President / having a charismatic leader and great public speaker / trying to negotiate a massive trade treaty with us (TTPA) and then once again the prominent negative role of Trump's behavior and craziness / Paris treaty withdrawal, the attention of New Zealanders and of the NZ media has really focused strongly on the US.
Also, I think another reason is that the English-speaking parts of the internet are disproportionately American (because the US has more population than Canada, Australia, UK, NZ, and Ireland combined) so whenever NZers go to any international website or news site (e.g. Reddit, CNN, BBC or whatever) the politics that most people there are talking about is US politics, so any general online browsing gives the average NZer a dose of US politics whether they want it or not. Also 90%+ of the TV programs and movies that people watch here are made in the US, so everyone here has a basic background knowledge of US geography and culture and politics as a result of that.
Because I am interested in politics to an unusual degree, I do things like watch the UK election results coming in on BBC for several hours, and watch UK and Danish political comedies & dramas like Yes Minister and Borgen, and have been a member of a political party here (fairly uncommon here - ~1% of population). But being aware of and interested in US politics is not unusual in NZ.Last edited by Starlight; 07-10-2017, 08:38 PM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Do you think if you outwardly pretend hard enough to be nationalistic and patriotic on the outside that that will actually make up for the inside?
Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face any longer. Although I do give you points for being a fan of YES, MINISTER. Who knew we actually had something in common? But I have to wonder if you realize it's satire.Last edited by Mountain Man; 07-10-2017, 09:50 PM.Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd

Your utter ignorance is positively adorable. That you think that other nations had more than a minor impact on the US fleet's assault through the Pacific islands makes me laugh out loud. It's positively hilarious!
