A Glory Seed Devotional
Emails to Stumpie…

Dear Stumpie,

No doubt about it, Stumpie I don’t know everything there is to know about Jesus and spirituality. I don’t know if you are familiar with the cartoon character Sponge Bob, who is a sponge who lives at the bottom of the sea and is always getting in trouble. Do you know what sponges do best? Sponges absorb water and other liquids. Many times, I think of myself as “Sponge Gary” because I want to absorb as much as I can about Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit, and other spiritual things.

I may be wrong for using the word proud but I am proud of not being a know-it-all because the words of Isaiah have become foundational in my life. “But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.” (Isaiah 50:7 ESV) I have discovered repeatedly Jesus can only help someone who admits their need for him. The statement “the Lord helps those who help themselves” is not always true. Remember the two thieves crucified with Jesus, it was the one who asked Jesus for help that received help the other fellow. While, he just died.

My favorite part of that scripture is, “…and I know that I shall not be put to shame.” Isaiah is expressing one of the greatest promises God makes to us. Peter writing years later expresses the promise this way. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Peter 5:6-10 ESV)

Do you know what all that stuff means Stumpie? It means God is not the great mystery people would have you believe, it means that God is not embarrassed to express his love for you in sending Jesus into your life to make it possible to have an intimate relationship with you.

Never forget Stumpie never think of yourself above helping even the lowliest beggar, nor forget it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help.

Take care my friend,
God’s Favor and Blessings,
Gary
