Male - Mormon"Mormons and Evangelicals are in competition"

This is an interesting article, and I think.
"In fact within the LDS Church there are no lessons, courses or seminars that discuss other faiths. No comparative religion classes are taught and other churches are never discussed over the pulpit.

This is not exactly true. On the university level (BYU), I took a comparative religion class discussing major religions. But no religions were talked down. In fact, I think the instructor I had wasn't even LDS."Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.
And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in c\taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning."

I'm just glad to see that many Evangelicals will support a decent man for office, even though he is Mormon. Also the notion that we are in competition for members, and how preachers all over the world introduce the name of Joseph Smith to congregations that have never heard of him, just to warn them to reject the missionaries at the door.
The comparative religion class was just a side note. Not interesting at all. In fact, rather boring.Last edited by OtherCheek; April 13th 2012 at 08:48 PM.

You really lost me in this thread, OC --- Not trying to fight you, just not seeing where you're trying to go. I've known an awful lot of preachers in my day, in many different communities, and I've only known ONE preacher who talked about Mormons from the pulpit on any more than just a passing reference. (and, not, it wasn't me
)
Well, that's part of what threw me off -- because the article was about Church, and your class was in college.The comparative religion class was just a side note. Not interesting at all. In fact, rather boring.

Re: "Mormons and Evangelicals are in competition"
I've never heard a Christian pastor mention Joseph Smith over the pulpit. (It may very well happen at some few churches, but I've never found myself in one of them.) I've heard Mormons mentioned exactly one time, and not in a derogatory way. I have, however, gone to an LDS stake conference and heard the central creed of my faith loudly denounced out of the blue as "false doctrine", and I have read misstatements about the history and content of my faith in basic teaching manuals of the LDS Church.
"If God has given [his people] such joy now, joy in their faith, in their hope, in love, in the truth of his scriptures, what kind of joy is he preparing for them at the end? If he feeds them like this on the journey, how will he feast them in their homeland?"--Augustine of Hippo
"It cannot be that the people should grow in grace unless they give themselves to reading. A reading people will always be a knowing people."--John Wesley
"Wherever men are still theological there is still some chance of their being logical."--G. K. Chesterton

You just jogged my memory! I remember years ago that I actually mentioned the Mormons AND Jehovah Witnesses from my pulpit --- but FAR from derogatory, I was trying to encourage our people, who we believe have the TRUTH, to be as ZEALOUS in sharing the Gospel as those who still go door to door like Evangelicals USED to! And the point was NOT "they have a false prophet and a false book"... the point was that THEY BELIEVE in what they are doing.....

I think I saw a film about Mormons once, on a Sunday night back when I was a Protestant.
It was maybe 25 years ago, so details are a little hazy.
