When was the last time you were crushed and overwhelmed beyond your ability to endure? When was the last time you expected to die (not physical death, but the death of your will to go on)? It’s not a crime to admit defeat. It’s not a sin to admit defeat, in fact if you stop and really think about it not admitting defeat will lead you into defeat. One of the words we Christians associate with defeat is victory. When we are defeated God is there to turn our defeat into victory. Jesus’ trial, crucifixion, and eventual resurrection is the ultimate proof that when defeat seems to have won God then gives the ultimate victory.
From defeat to victory. It seems so simple, so easy. Stand in the darkness of defeat flip the victory switch and suddenly our defeat is flooded with God’s Light of Victory! If only it were that easy. If only it was that simple. And it would be if it weren’t for one nine letter word in between defeat and victory, surrender. Ever hear or sing the hymn “I Surrender All”? (If you haven’t now’s a good time to give it a try.)

The difference between Jesus’ surrender and our surrendering his surrender was once and for all time our surrendering like Paul’s is our never-ending story. “We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.” (2 Corinthians 1:8–9, NLT)
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”**
