I'm going to go straight to the point about heaven: atheists do object to the idea of heaven. I think Christopher Hitchens put quite well when he termed such a place a "celestial North Korea." Why would an atheist be interested in an eternity of felicitous servitude with no opportunity for contrast or maturation? Perfection seems glorious to people who are discontent with experiencing their life now. But for this atheist, simply being alive and present right now is wonderful. Why hang my hat on anything else?

      Hi Kane 'n all!

Okay, I am partly bored and I'm sure that wherever that conversation went as a knock-off reaction to something written by either Pitchforkpat or Jimbo eons ago, which I couldn't help noticing was applauded by bertaberts and Tassman (present company included) on the thread titled 'Hell is awesome' probably got around to the subject of heaven, eventually.

I've been reading 'The Great Divorce' for a few months now and think you hit the nail on the proverbial head with this one.

I know that one could say stuff like heaven's going to be an endless cup of praise and worship in the presence of the one who is eternally fascinating etc. etc., but it's not a view that I find particularly welcoming for it seems to lacks continuity and why would any author bother with so much detail to begin with to have it end so painfully routine and humdrum, if you will? Where is the continuity?

I'm almost positive you've read the book and can remember where Lewis talks about this sort of thing. Okay, now I'm going to listen to it again.

      Bye, bye for now.
      Peace,
      Eric.

      1. btw. I originally titled this thread, 'The gospel according to C.S Lewis' dig it!

      Eric,

Yes, I've read the book. Twice: once on my own in bible college, and once to my wife about 10 years ago. Good book! Lewis had a brilliant and wonderful imagination.

      Cheers!
      Kane
Anytime theology hits on something that is true, it is because it is from another discipline. One cannot have a field of knowledge built on something that essentially amounts to dressed-up agnosticism.

      Hi Kane,
Yeah, it's wonderful, something I've enjoyed about Lewis's books since I began reading in 1977. Though, I find there's something else going on there, something other worldly which marks his writings. Like a lake that one has seen in a dream and there it is in his books. I guess you must have read 'Till We Have Faces' too? Dark Tower? The Science Fiction Trilogy etc.

Well, back to 'The Great Divorce'

      Peace,
      Eric.
