Knock! Knock!
Shalom!
“My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” (Psalm 73:26, NLT)
Yesterday afternoon while sitting with our son’s canine companion, Chance (by divine design) I stumbled on the above scripture and suddenly I was consumed by a twenty-two word verse in Psalms. It was if I’d become Jonah and was swallowed up by the Word. “My heath may fail…” yup, I’m in here. “…and my spirit may grow weak…” that could be me, but it isn’t! because, “…God remains the strength of my heart…”
For the last fourteen days I have been calling Jesus out (there are times when I do live dangerously) on what he said about his parable of persistent praying. “Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this story: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You say to him, ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.’ And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you.’ But I tell you this—though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence.” (Luke 11:5–8, NLT)
So far in response to my Knock, knock, knocking, at Jesus’ door, I can only hear the echo of my own knocking. But Jesus put no time limit on knocking so persistently I continue knocking. Yesterday I was becoming a little discouraged but then along comes the Psalmist and the Holy Spirit with, “Your health may fail, and your spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of your heart; and he never gives up on you.” (that’s our version of how I understand and experience Psalms 73:26)
Will Jesus eventually open the door and give me the food I need to give my “unwanted visitor” so he’ll go away? Only time will tell but I (we) KNOW this Jesus is on the other side of the door listening intently and waiting for just the right time!
Knock… Knock…Knock… Knock…
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”**
