A Glory Seed Devotional
Home Sweet PSALMS, Room One…
“Happy are those who don’t listen to the wicked, who don’t go where sinners go, who don’t do what evil people do. They love the Lord’s teachings, and they think about those teachings day and night. They are strong, like a tree planted by a river. The tree produces fruit in season, and its leaves don’t die. Everything they do will succeed.” (Psalm 1:1-3, NCV)
Each time I read the First Psalms the sentence that powerfully and meaningfully impacts is “The tree produces fruit in season, and its leaves don’t die.” That sentence has come alive in my life more times, than I can count. What these three verses are saying is illustrated in what Jesus said hundreds of years later. “Don’t store treasures for yourselves here on earth where moths and rust will destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them. But store your treasures in heaven where they cannot be destroyed by moths or rust and where thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your treasure is.” (Matthew 6:19-21, NCV)
Jesus, of course is not talking about material treasures he’s talking about the treasures we discover as we “mine” the words of God. For some reading and studying the bible (Psalms 1:1-2) is what they consider “mining” yet for me reading and studying is simply preparing to enter the mine where the actual mining takes place. For me the actual mining takes place not in the scriptures but in life because life is where the “treasure” Jesus speaks of comes alive.
In March of 1981 as I faced surgery for the first time in my life. The surgeon was going to remove my Thymus Gland. I remember the doctor coming into my room before the surgery and saying there was a 25% chance I wouldn’t make it. When the surgical attendants wheeled me toward the operating room, I was TERRIFIED. And I remember looking up at the ceiling and praying the 23rd Psalm and the last thing I remember before going out was the treasure of peace.
Reading this evotional or another devotional, reading (or listening, I love listening*) to the bible may seem like an inconvenience but I can assure you it is not time wasted. But you already know that, don’t you?
Grace and PEACE!
