      Modern Christian Philosophy

Who are the really engaging Christian philosophers today and what are they saying that's edifying? I want to be bowled over by a good strong speaker or writer. Plantinga and Moreland don't count mainly because of what's in my signature, and because from essays I've read of theirs they are boring.

Your making it tough dropping two of the major modern stars from the list. Most others bring nothing really new from the Evangelical Fundamentalist and the respective of the Roman Church there are numerous recent philosophers, but they mostly hold the old lines.

Some may cite CS Lewis, but nothing new here

I personally would have to move on to some Mystic Islamic philosophers, Native American, Buddhist, and modern Baha'i Philosophers.

Do they offer insight about humankind's relationship to the natural world?

Says the guy who quotes Chrissy Hallquist as a legitimate academic source.

But anyway, to answer the OP: Richard Swinburne and William Lane Craig are two of the other big names (Craig is definitely a strong speaker), and there's also Peter Van Inwagen and Marilyn McCord Adams.

      Re: Modern Christian Philosophy

If "good philosopher" is determined by what "bowls Whag over", then I'm afraid I can't know what constitutes an effective bowler nor am I convinced that "good" and "bowled Whag" are synonymous.

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'

'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

I don't know who Chrissy Hallquist is. I only read her article on Plantinga's creationist paper trail, which I did not know about. I never cited her (or him?) as a "legitimate academic source" but merely to credit her (it?) for the well expressed quote.

Craig isn't a philosopher as far as I know. Thanks for the other names. What do you like about Swinburne or the others?

Yes I did. Big oops. I take it back.

Is there any conservative Christian philosopher that isn't affiliated with the Discovery Institute, I guess should have been my question.

Native American and Baha'i philosophers do offer insights about humankind's relationship with the natural world.

      Whag,
I agree with post 5. Perhaps if you explained your own philosophical position it might be easier to clean bowl you.

      Peace,
      Eric.

I was partial to Gregory Boyd, John Sanders, and Clark Pinnock (RIP) when I was in bible college. Despite my eventual deconversion, I still keep their works with me.
Anytime theology hits on something that is true, it is because it is from another discipline. One cannot have a field of knowledge built on something that essentially amounts to dressed-up agnosticism.

Very big question. Lots of complex answers. Adrift and I exchanged a couple of PMs on this topic. If I could distill my deconversion into an easy statement, it would be: because Christianity stopped making sense.
