No religion "in essence" is any one of those things. Christianity, like most religions, is all those things. I don't understand your question.

I've often wondered about the discussion we had about this (All Those Years Ago) and I'm sure all things considered whatever this verse means in it's 20/20 context there's much we will never be able to figure out in respect of the Christian doctrine of the atonement:
