How can you love a God when you can’t see him, feel him, hear him, smell him, or taste him? How can you love a God that stands by and watches his greatest creation, his people, suffer in so many needless ways? How can you love a God that stands by as the world he lovingly created goes to hell in a hand basket?

Which of those questions do you struggle with the most? I struggle with the second question “How can you love a God that stands by and watches his greatest creation, his people, suffer in so many needless ways?” Not a day goes by but what that question challenges me in some way or another. But when I think about it, I discover it has one dangerous flaw designed to capture me and draw me away from God. People do not suffer needlessly. Another dangerous flaw is God does not stand by when people suffer.

When I am the victim of suffering its single purpose is the “shore up” my relationship with God. Suffering is one way God draws me into a more intimate relationship with him. When I am an observer and witness suffering in others God is stirring me to action as his servant assigned to not only help in alleviating the cause of the suffering but also to be a witness to God’s unconditional love.

Psalms 91 is one of the most prophetic Psalms in the Gary Piper Personal Library of God Messages I fall back on when I find myself facing overwhelming odds. But when I think of “Good Ole 91” I understand it ministering to me at three different levels (in reverse order of importance) – physical, emotional, and spiritual. It is the last 3 verses that impact me the most and it is those 3 verses that put my mind at rest when challenged by question 2 above. By the way it’s God’s message to you not only today but every day so you might want to file it away in your own Personal Library of God Messages.

“Because he (insert your name) holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him (insert your name); I will protect him (insert your name), because he (insert your name) knows my name. When he (insert your name) calls to me, I will answer him (insert your name); I will be with him (insert your name) in trouble; I will rescue him (insert your name) and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him (insert your name) and show him (insert your name) my salvation.” (Psalms 91:14-16 ESV)
