Re: June 2012 Screwballs
These comments, in reference to the Gospels and Jesus' resurrection, I saw while debating on a facebook page deserves one:
I wonder if she realized that the people "rising from coffins" weren't crucified.I don't dispute Christ's existence or his historical importance or the validity of his basic message, the metaphysical claims for divinity I can well understand in the context of his contemporary culture, they don't make sense now. Occasionally people do rise from their sickbeds and coffins, there was a child reported to have done that, on the BBC website this week. I don't hold that proof of divinity though!
...or the fact that the Gospels writers didn't gain anything from writing them (except shame and death).I'm just a reasonably intelligent person trying to make sense of the first hand experiences of working with others for over 40 years. I tend not to trust anecdotal second hand narratives, especially from people who several centuries ago, had much to gain from these stories. As an artist I get to look behind the scenery of inspiration and spirituality, as a person with technical knowledge I have a feel for how things are put together, as a leader I understand how people are moved. I am led by experience to be sceptical of belief and conservative establishments.

I think this guy deserves an anti-screwball and a huge round of applause for his "You're not special" speech to high school seniors:

Especially this:
"You see, if everyone is special, then no one is. If everyone gets a trophy, trophies become meaningless. ... We have of late, we Americans, to our detriment, come to love accolades more than genuine achievement."
and this:

CS Lewis, Mere ChristianityThere is no need to be worried by facetious people who try to make the Christian hope of 'Heaven' ridiculous by saying they do not want 'to spend eternity playing harps'. The answer to such people is that if they cannot understand books written for grown-ups, they should not talk about them.

Yes and No... To be fair, there are a lot of people that work Sunday mornings (myself included), so that cripples my Sunday church attendance. However, even in a small city like Moose Jaw there are churches that hold weekday services (not to mention the fact they have ministries specifically for young adults). If they exist here in a small town of 33'000, then I have no doubt that they exist in other, much larger locales. What's to stop someone from finding a church that meets their needs (and where their gifts can be used effectively to meet others needs)?

Re: June 2012 Screwballs
At Church this weekend we had a guest speaker over, and he's just got back from a church conference for our denomination over in Malaysia.
The church there is 70%+ teenagers.
Services have to be in English because if they conduct them in Malaysian, they will be considered converts from Islam which is illegal (by constitutional law ethnic Malays are considered Muslim. As Muslims, by Malaysian law, they under the jurisdiction of Sharia law. So if the services are in Malaysian, that must mean they are ethnically Malaysian and therefore under Sharia law for being Muslim converts to Christianity)
In schools the kids obviously aren't allowed to talk about the Gospel. but they are finding ways to witness about Christ to their Muslim teachers and friends, to hold prayer meetings on school grounds (in secret).
And God is answering their prayers, teachers being healed, opportunities opening up to be able to Witness to people, and the Church is growing."If you can ever make any major religion look absolutely ludicrous, chances are you haven't understood it"

But-but-but-but some Christians are mean and they persecute me for being an atheist (they tell me they're praying for me!!!!). Ergo, I'll conclude that Christianity is false.
