Due to rampant stupidity by Skeptics, and time issues, I'm only going to be on TWeb in my own (tektonics.org) section from now on. Deal with it.

CNN article about preachers-turned-atheists. Apparently one of the final straws for the man profiled here was the failure of prayer. Perhaps somebody should have read Tekton's article "Does Prayer Get You Anything"?

Then Morgoth turned upon Húrin, and he said: 'Fool, little among Men, and they are the least of all that speak! Have you seen the Valar, or measured the power of Manwë and Varda?
Do you know the reach of their thought? Or do you think, perhaps, that their thought is upon you, and that they may shield you from afar?'
'I know not,' said Húrin. 'Yet so it might be, if they willed. For the Elder King shall not be dethroned while Arda endures.'

Re: June 2012 Screwballs
Screwball nomination to the woman in the following story:
My wife called a local church which advertises a Deaf ministry to inquire about getting a sign language interpreter so my Deaf son could attend their summer Vacation Bible School. The woman instead suggested that we attend a healing service so they could pray for him, to which my wife indignantly responded, "You obviously don't know anything about Deaf culture or you'd know why I find that comment extremely offensive." (For those who don't know, suggesting that a culturally Deaf individual needs healing would be like telling a black person that he needs to be "cured" of his skin color, and since the church supposedly has a Deaf ministry, the woman's ignorance on this point is inexcusable.) The woman more or less blew my wife off and insinuated that it's a salvational issue, that if a Christian is sick or disabled then it's because they're not exercising sufficient faith and really aren't fully saved -- her justification for this belief is that the same Greek word translated as "saved" is also translated as "healed" in other contexts, as if a word means every possible connotation in every context, which is obviously not how language works.
After my wife hung up the phone, she emailed the woman and reiterated just how offensive her comment was because we have adopted the cultural view of deafness and don't see our son as needing any kind of healing. The woman wrote back in full holier-than-though passive-aggressive mode and said, among other things, "I'm sorry that you are not ready to receive healing and that my offer of prayer offended you."
That's the kind of smugness you could slap. Some may call me foolish - some may call me odd
But I'd rather be a fool in the eyes of men
Than a fool in the eyes of God

That's funny, I thought Christians still believed they had to live with consequences.

Another example of the media mentioning that an arrestee was a "devout Christian" when it is completely irrelevant to the story at hand. This is becoming a serious pet peeve.

Re: June 2012 Screwballs
Today's dose of Symphering:
In other words, when he doesn't challenge them and gives in to their bad behavior.I haven't been doing this very long, but I'm dealing with lots of atheists too, some of them who come at me with anger in the beginning. And when I'm respectful and understanding to them, alot of them turn into friends.
I'm "worn out" or "beaten down" huh.Holding may be worn out from the debate and the attacks, but if you're going to represent the faith, turning cold and hard and condescending is just not ok. If he's truly too beaten down to deal maturely, he should take a break until he's up to it again imo
He don't know me vewy well -- DO HE???
Symph needs to take his own advice.
And, LA is still playing that broken record:
Sigh. After losing his job with the state, Holding found that being a computer apologist was better than getting a proper full-time job. He set up a tax-free "ministry" with donations to supplement what his wife earns, freeing him to "unleash my warrior".
Megalo-narcissists don't like being told what to do. Holding wasn't going to force himself to answer to profs, advisors, etc again.
He will disparage an opponent's credentials, but claims he doesn't need any because---he's an "INFORMATION BROKER".
LA, I know you're obsessively watching, so I remind you:
1) I did not "lose" my job with the state. I voluntarily gave it up so that I would not displace someone else.
2) I had another full time job in between the two (state and ministry).
3) I had set up the ministry long before that -- in fact, 3 years before I quit the state.
4) Being an info broker IS a credential, you moron.
