Re: Who is your favorite Bible scholar?

Is "Paul of Tarsus" an allowable answer?

John Calvin, of course, set the standard for systematic theology exposition. Don Carson wins the "quantity with quality" award, hands down. Check out this book-length review of Peter Enns' book on the Bible, for instance. I envy Carson's concision. John Piper has a wonderful gift for presenting theology in an accurate yet winsomely accessible way.

I have a few, but I definitely second D.A. Carson.

I also appreciate Douglas Moo, FF Bruce, Mark Strauss, and Gordon Fee, to name a few others.

Re: Who is your favorite Bible scholar?

While I haven't read any of his books yet, NT Wright is pretty amazing to listen to; so eloquent.

I also love Dr. Michael L Brown (author of the Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus books) and am growing to really like Richard Bauckham

      I've probably forgotten some, but...

I too really appreciate Dr. Brown's evangelistic efforts amongst the Jewish people.

In regards to Wright, I'm a little suspicious of some of his New Perspective stuff.

I'm reminded of an interview I read with a Bible professor once who, when asked what theologian he would most want to meet, named John, and defended his non-answer of Jesus by saying "I already know him".

NT Wright is a good speaker, and a decent writer from a technical perspective. You're correct to question the actual views he chooses to promote, though.

Re: Who is your favorite Bible scholar?

Historically, I'd have to agree with Calvin. Currently, I'd say Wright on the Gospels and the Gospel. I'm not so sure about Wright's views on Paul, however. This choice may simply be for his voluminous and accessible writing. There may well be better scholars in in the journals.

One thing I do like about Wright is that he is a bishop, who combines both NT scholarship and theology. Too often the Bible department and the theology department don't talk to each other.

I am a huge fan of Greg Boyd and N.T. Wright amongst others such as Dallas WIllard, Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Greg Boyd would be the most influential to me.
