I'm saying that unless something RIGHT OUT OF SCIENCE FICTION comes along,
interstellar travel will never be achieved. We can have colonies on Mars - but not today,
future technical developments are necessary. But for travel to a planet outside of our
solar system, it will take a discovery that today is science fiction --- get it?

So it's not as if "right out of science fiction" means "it can't be done." It just means, "We haven't achieved it so far, but who knows what will happen next week?"

Go ahead and tell me how you envision interstellar travel. Here's my prediction :

(1) You will either pull something that today is unadulterated science fiction (e.g., "quantum teleportation")

(2) I will shoot it down faster than you can say "boo"

(3) It will be based on totally unsupported speculation (making anything possible)


Sure, if you want a 'blank check' into which you can write "warp drive", "wormholes" or anything else
that pleases your fancy, then ANYTHING is possible. But, here I am holding your feet to the fire of
realistic science -- 'blank checks' are not allowed.

BTW, I am well aware that today there are things that just a generation ago would have belonged to
the realm of "science fiction". You people are missing the point. I am talking about "science fiction"
in the sense of things that either oppose known laws of physics and / or that amount to pulling "magic"
out of a hat. "Quantum teleportation" and "warp drive" are examples of this.

manufactured fairly sophisticated equipment for the radiation oncology industry (to measure the
dose of radiation administered to patients) as well as others for measuring locomotive emissions.
This involves hardware, electronics and software conforming to supplied specifications (e.g., the
EPA specified a light source between 530nm and 570nm so I used a commercial LED of 555nm).
That's not even counting my 7+ years in the Air Force as a research scientist where I was awarded
the Air Force Scientific Achievement Award in 1979. A "luddite" ......... bwahahahaha

So, as you can see, with your post you have only succeeded in making yourself look stoooopid.

First, it is a PhD, not a M Div.

Second, the work that I did is something that you know nothing about
and so you are totally unqualified to make any judgments on it.

Third, I would have written the same dissertation had I been at
Princeton, Harvard or MIT. So if the dissertation is the same, what
else matters? IOW, look at the work, not your snobbery.

Fourth, I did not "buy" anything - I worked for that degree.
I worked harder and paid more for that degree than you will ever know.
That the degree does not conform to your standards is fine - I've never
asked you to accept it. Simply ignore it and move on, kiddo.

It's easily possible for someone to be an idiot on one subject, and brilliant in another. Also, he is at least giving reasons better than "if man were meant to fly, then he would have been born with wings".

I think the point was (at least to me) that folks have been declaring various things, that today we take for granted, as being impossible. Obviously that doesn't make them impossible even if a highly qualified person once proclaimed that it was. The same goes for many things that are declared by some to be forever impossible
