Natural Science 301 Guidelines

This is an open forum area for all members for discussions on all issues of science and origins. This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. This means obvious trolling and flaming that becomes a problem will be dealt with, and you might find yourself in the doghouse.

As usual, Tweb rules apply. If you haven't read them now would be a good time.

  • Iceshelf breaks off Antarctica

The massive Larsen C ice-shelf in Antarctica had been developing a 100-mile long crack across it over the last few years:

The section of the ice shelf has now fully broken off, creating one of the largest icebergs in human history. The iceberg is approximately the size of the US state of Delaware:

This is the latest in a series of events since the mid-1990s where the Larsen ice-shelves have lost major mass. The ice-shelves are believed to have formed around 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice-age. Losing this much mass at once is not believed to be normal behavior for these ice-shelves.

Since ice-shelves are already floating on water, they do not cause sea level changes when they break off or melt. Sea level rise will be caused when ice on land melts (i.e. the ice on the Antarctic continent proper and in Greenland and Siberia). This massive iceberg will gradually melt, but may cause problems in shipping-lanes around South America. A few people have suggested there may be some merit in redrawing maps of Antarctica since the shape of the coastline is now different.

Never you fear. God will intervene to prevent people from destroying the world. Well, at least according to the conservative Evangelicals.

As someone that accepts AGW and it's threat, we should be careful about attributing this to climate change.

I'm not a climatologist, so my understanding comes from a place of being trained in the physical sciences, but my knowledge of climate science is from my own reading of the literature.

Ice sheets are not well understood. The dynamics are not predictable like long term climate trends because of others factors at play like surface area, land mass, stress and pressure, local weather patterns, etc. Ice sheets take centuries to build via snowfall accumulation. Since the Last Glacial Maximum glaciers have receded off and on throughout the world. It is true that humanity is warming the world at a fast pace and that it's expected that icebergs and glaciers will recede, much like when the Luarentide Ice Sheet over North America collapsed during 'Meltwater pulse 1A' after the Earth entered the Holocene, and world sea levels sky rocketed.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meltwater_pulse_1A

If this is apart of an overall trend, or if other factors are at play is unknown - I will not speculate.

Far more concerning is Greenland and West Antarctica.

That is not the position of many evangelicals, perhaps most. Certainly not of most Christians in the world. Any more than the antics of Westboro Baptist Church. Bigotry has many forms Tassman. Careful lest you see yourself in the mirror.

All indications are that this is not a direct result of climate change. Ice shelves calve off icebergs all the time, if usually smaller ones. If the rest of the ice shelf behind it disintegrates, then you start considering climate change.

B15 occurred in early autumn ... this one is mid-winter, which (to me) seems kind of odd.
