Rumors of the Higgs discovery
At the next International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP) in July 2012, both teams, Atlas and CMS, will present their latest results. And chances are they will get a sigma 4 signal for the Higgs particle. See Peter Woit's blog here. In the meantime Tommasso Dorigo has a simple explanation what those two teams are up to. See How Fast Do We Get Higgs Mass Plots From Raw Data ?

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
Philip Gibbs has more on this, with a bonus video on Peter Higgs.
Remember folks, when the Higgs particle is officially discovered, this will be one of the greatest discovery EVER.

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
I view it somewhat differently. If the Higgs was found to exist, it would be like a third leg to the basic optional possible theories that would eventually make up our knowledge of the fundamental nature of physics. Right know things are more than a little wobbly with a number of possible options, and many uncertainties with everything on one or two legs.

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
The Higgs boson is important for different reasons. For one, they built the LHC, which cost billions of dollars and required the collaboration from over 100 countries, to specifically discover it. But more importantly, the Higgs boson plays the role of giving mass to every massive particles. The Standard Model predicted it, but knowing the mass of the Higgs itself (this is not theoretically predicted) would help physicists to unlock the nature of mass itself and help with future attempts at unified theories. On a technological base, consider that when electricity was discovered, no one knew the globe would fairly quickly be blanketed with lightbulbs. And when quantum mechanics was discovered, no one anticipated semiconductors and the ensuing electronics revolution. So who knows what a discovery of the Higgs boson will mean in 10 or 20 or 100 years’ time?

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
Which of course is irrational... And infinite number of turtles hold up the last turtle...
Hume...How can we satisfy ourselves without going on in infinitum? And, after all, what satisfaction is there in that infinite progression? Let us remember the story of the Indian philosopher and his elephant. It was never more applicable than to the present subject. If the material world rests upon a similar ideal world, this ideal world must rest upon some other; and so on, without end. It were better, therefore, never to look beyond the present material world."And all our yesterdays have lighted fools, the way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” Shakespeare

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
Infinite number of turtles there is no last turtle. By the definition of infinite there is always one more turtle.
Sum of Infinite Geometric Progression, IGP
Infinite regression/progressions represent alone is an ancient limited view of infinities that involve sets, and do not address the whole scope of more present day math and cosmology of infinities, Defining infinities in sets does not limit the extent of the infinities in the sets, nor does it limite other infinities like 'absolute infinities.'How can we satisfy ourselves without going on in infinitum? And, after all, what satisfaction is there in that infinite progression?Last edited by shunyadragon; June 22nd 2012 at 12:26 PM.

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
The problem is the standard model makes predictions, such as the existence of the Higgs, to be more widely accepted. At present there are competing theories that explain the evidence we have. Without confirmation of the predictions that theories make, they are not on firm ground against competing theories.

Re: Rumors of the Higgs discovery
That is why it is irrational. How can't you get through an infinite number of turtles to get to the last one? You can't. And Shuny, there is a "last" turtle - that would be, by analogy, this present universe. Did you miss that?
It is still nonsense - even today...Infinite regression/progressions represent an ancient limited view of infinities that involve sets, and do not address the more present day math and cosmology of infinities,"And all our yesterdays have lighted fools, the way to dusty death.
