Question For JW's Regarding Funeral Traditions
Hi,
This is not a debate and I'm not getting at anything. A coworker who is JW had a family member die and we were wanting to make sure that there wasn't anything we might do innocently that would be offensive to the family. Are there any gifts (flowers/plants, casseroles, et al) that should be avoided? Any customs we should know about or things we should/should not do? We would really appreciate any input - no one here is familiar enough with JW doctrine to be confident and the family is already upset so we didn't want to call and ask.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like we have any JWs in attendance. However, I did find a couple of articles on the web that may be helpful:

One thing of note--do not be surprised if there are some attempts to proseletyze during the service. While I know you disagree (as do I) with JW doctrine, to them this is just as much a chance to get the word out as it is for devout mainstream Christians.Life sometimes needs to be grabbed by the throat and beaten with a lead pipe. ~ Sir Longpost, a good friend of mine.

Re: Question For JW's Regarding Funeral Traditions
My ex-wife was actively involved with the JWs for about 18rs and consequently (though indirectly) so was I. As a general rule, JW funerals are joyous and not mournful as is typical with other groups.
From personal experience, when one of my sons committed suicide and word got around (through the children network) people (JWs) I hadn't seen for decades turned up to the funeral to support the family (many of which I didn't even recognise). Lots of talk of God gives consideration when a person is mentally deranged. No judgement, only encouragement to believe in God's righteousness and encouragement to believe that the future resurrection is a gaurantee...so at a JW funeral you'll probably encounter the usual tears from immediate family, in my experience, you find the funeral a positive event...so be positive...Decades ago I was given the nickname "apostoli" by an older Greek lady at a takeaway, because I was her favourite "Paul" and the tag stuck. Too many people named "Paul" in this world! No other significance in the tag...
