From our good friends at Wikiknowitalls....

Grand Poobah is a term derived from the name of the haughty character Pooh-Bah in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado (1885).....

The term "Grand Poobah" was used on the television show The Flintstones as the name of a high ranking elected position in a men's club. Fred Flintstone and his friend Barney Rubble were members of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes Lodge No. 26. The lodge is a spoof of men's clubs like the Freemasons, the Shriners, the Elks Club and the Moose Lodge....

The character Howard Cunningham on the TV series Happy Days was a Grand Poobah of Leopard Lodge No. 462 in Milwaukee...

      All in good humor.

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Seems I'm always late to the party.

How was the first vision story in PGP 1, interpreted by Smith's early successors? Since these held the high offices of president, counselors, apostles and seventies, their teachings should also be considered, I would think.
Love the truth; follow it no matter where it leads; embrace it no matter how much it costs; accept no substitutes; and be satisfied with nothing less than the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Perfect Embodiment of the Truth; Love and follow Him!

Interestingly, I've been reading some lately about the fact that the alleged First Vision wasn't even widely told or even discussed in the early Mormon Church. It wasn't until the 20th century that it was given the importance it has today.

Would you mind sharing with me where you've been reading this information?

And when the first vision story became more prominent, what was the teaching of LDS leaders concerning it at the time?

Not at all, BC ... lemme do some digging. I've been doing a lot of reading lately, so I'll have to figure out where I got that.

And when the first vision story became more prominent, what was the teaching of LDS leaders concerning it at the time?
I can't find where there was so much discussion about the apostasy of the rest of the Churches, as there was an emphasis on Smith having been commissioned by God through the experience. From what I read (and I'll really try to find it) the elevation of the "First Vision" to prominence was to offset and downplay all the attention that polygamy had gained. Kind of shifting emphasis.

Okay, sorry for the picking of the nit. And I don't know if Grand Master is the right term either. Apparently there can be a Worshipful Master, or a Warden, over a lodge. They even have a "Chaplain" rank, so you might have a slot waiting for you.

All I know is that I would only refer to leaders in YOUR church with the term "Grand Poobah" if I was trying to be disrespectful. If some Masons are cool using it about their leaders, then good for them. Maybe they don't take Masonry very seriously.

(If you were NOT offended, then why did you spend so many keystrokes on this? )
Things can bug me with offending me. That's why.

No disrespect was intended by the use of "Grand Poobah". Who can argue with Happy Days and the Flintstones?

I must know you too well, Jeff. That's exactly how I read it, and I had to go back and see what was wrong with the way you said it in the first place!
