      Depends on the situation.

      Does it ever succeed?
Yep, I have watched it work before.

      Who decides who 'deserves' it?
Careful understanding, I tend to find some good markers would be such stuff as atheist calling Christians 'faithheads' or Christians calling atheist 'immoral', and are serious about it, tends to be a good indication that such a person isn't interested in any kind of rational discussion.

      Isn't this a subjective judgement?
So we should be nice to obnoxious jerks instead?

Why name and shame on an obscure thread read by relatively few people?
Last month's Screwball thread had over 15,000 views and just over 600 replies. June's had over 15,000 views too and a little over 500 replies. This month currently has over 2,000 views with144 replies. In natural science, the fossil find thread has almost 150,000 views, but has been posting for over 4 years. A thread in natural science that is 1 month old, seems to average about 2-4,000 views a month and that is on the high end. So really, the numbers seem to be showing me that, if anything, the screwball threads are among the most popular threads on T web, since none, since December are below 10,000 views. I would say it is obscure and read by few people anymore then comments on youtube are (if anything, they are more obscure then T web threads are).

Can you really imagine Jesus and the disciples sitting around a lunch table saying stuff like 'Boy, that Roman was a moron! You sure showed him boss! His theology was pathetic!' slapping each other on the back for how witty they are?
Considering that isn't what is going on, this is little more then a strawmen.

Crystal, let's not play coy. You quoted a whole post of mine that was composed of an entire paragraph, and then asked, "Can you show me where the Bible says this?". Rather than quote the entire Bible to you, please indicate the one phrase of mine, verbatim, that you want me to substantiate.

All of it would be a good start, but perhaps I should ask where you got the idea from.

I'm not playing this game. If/when you're able to quote verbatim the actual point you have a problem with, then I may be inclined to respond. Otherwise, I'm not going to waste my time.

I think it is pretty straight forward, where you are getting this idea about 'given authority' from?

This has provoked a lot more discussion than your normal hit and run OP.

True, but very little about the actual topic.

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings lilpixie, but the reason I need you to quote the exact statement in my previous post you're having issues with, verbatim, is because I don't want to spend a lot of time citing scripture and commentary, only to see later that your issue isn't with something I literally said, but instead a strawman built out of my words. I try to be careful with my words when I post, lilpixie, because I know on this forum anything you say can be used against you. Especially in these sorts of debates where people are often looking for "gotchas".

I'd have to see the context. Like I said, I think that this issue is far more complicated than quoting a few proof-texts.

I'm not looking for proof-texts, but can you point me to an instance of calling someone on the Internet a moron really qualifies as tough love? I think of tough love in more real-world situations, eg, parents struggling to find the best way to deal with an alcoholic son. Real life situations, where gutwrenching and heartrending decisions are contemplated by people who are torn up in their immense love of someone who is being self-destructive. It seems to me that when one calls someone on the Internet a moron, this is not really akin to tough love, and I suspect it rarely involves real love. Most of these Internet arguments seem to be more about scoring points or defending a false image of oneself, that kind of thing.

      Agreed.

Is there not a huge difference between calling out people who are misusing their power to subject others to oppression, and who demand more from those they lead than themselves, and just grabbing some pour soul whose ideas you don't like and holding them up for display and ridicule?
I see repeated mockery and ridicule of the YEC position simply for the fact that someone believes it, and not due to the person actually doing something stupid. Even on OEC websites I see constant attacks like "narrow minded", and things that are completely disrespectful. One example being a comic depicting Archbishop Ussher counting on his toes in order to arrive at a date for creation. Does this qualify in your opinion as unwarranted attacks? Or is the fact that YEC are being attacked enough to justify it?

Christ was not the person in (human) power. Christ was not holding these men up for ridicule. He was calling out their hypocrisy so as to help free the people that were being held captive by their misappropriation of power. He was also trying to set the captives free, spiritually. You can not compare the two.
Actually, he was doing both. Why are the two mutually exclusive?

Or are you of the opinion that a fellow walking into McDonalds and shooting an innocent by-stander is the moral equivalent of a fellow killing a man holding a gun to his wife's head because 'they both killed someone'.

Can you possibly compare a fellow calling attention to the holes in a poor fellow's jeans and encouraging a crowd of onlookers to laugh and jeer the same as Christ calling out the wickedness of the Pharisees?
Wow, where have you seen the screwballs thread making fun of people for things like the jeans example you gave? Usually it's been things like the "Christ Myth" junk which can lead people away from Jesus, or the actions of Westboro Baptist Church, which makes ALL Christians look bad to those on the outside. Or even lately thing like those who believe in New Age Gnostic beliefs, and we are calling them on their heretical views. I don't see anything similar in the screwballs thread to your example.

Have we come to the point in our arrogance and zeal for perfect 'doctrine' that we no longer can parse:

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

Do we even teach people to memorize and meditate on this verse any longer?

      Jim
To be perfectly honest, if I am acting like a moron, I WANT people to call me on it so I can correct my behavior, but maybe that's just me.

What about if you encounter say someone who believes that the Holocaust never happened, or that the moon landings were faked, wouldn't you call out their nonsense as just that, nonsense? I can see that in a case like this something like "those ideas are stupid, and here is why" would be a way to respond.
